WHERE IS EVERYBODY?:

Rick Turley pointed out this amusing looking utility, Frappr, which allows you to map an on-line community. If enough folks want to add their locations we'll post a permanent link to it.

Lansing, Michigan. This is in case I can't pin my place, so to speak.

Posted by: Mikey at October 26, 2005 12:04 AM

Wow! Far more Blue-Staters than I would have ever imagined.

Posted by: Bret at October 26, 2005 1:08 AM

Would someone help me add a picture to my profile. I have a picture in "my documents" under "my pictures". I'm using XP.

Without intending any disrespect to the city in which I was born and raised, now seems like a good time to post a little poetry (Harper's Magazine, 1869):

Hast ever been in Omaha,
Where rolls the dark Missouri down,
And four strong horses scarce can draw
An empty wagon through the town?
Where sand is blown from every mound
To fill the eyes and ears and throat-
Where all the steamers are aground
And all the shanties are afloat?
Where whisky shops the livelong night
Are vending their poison juice:
Where men are often very tight,
And women deemed a trifle loose?
Where taverns have an anxious guest
For every corner, shelf and crack;
With half the people going west,
And all the others going back?
Where theaters are all the run
And bloody scalpers come to trade;
Where everything is overdone
And everybody underpaid?
If not, take heed to what I say:
You'll find it just as I have found it;
And if it lies upon your way,
For God's sake, reader, go around it!

English Bob: Little Bill, well I thought you was, well I thought that you were dead.

Little Bill Daggett: I heard that one myself, Bob. Hell, I even thought I was dead 'til I found out it was just that I was in Nebraska.

No doubt the Europeans are cross that you have to zoom out to see them... :)

If you are using an old browser, you get the blank rectangle.

If you know how to edit the entries, please share the info. I apparently added the picture twice.

Where are the Canadians?

Posted by: tefta at October 26, 2005 1:09 PM

It looks like we've got a decent number of folks, can anyone think of an idea for or produce a good button (see the left hand column of the blog) we could post permanently?

Posted by: oj at October 26, 2005 1:18 PM

It looks like the Puget Sound wins the "highest concentration of BroJudders" so far. Strange, but welcome.

Posted by: Timothy at October 26, 2005 1:21 PM

Timothy:

Actually, I've a theory about the site--it's that folk are desperate to find someplace where their own ideas don't sound crazy. That drives up the number of Blue Staters and holds down the trolls.

Posted by: oj at October 26, 2005 1:30 PM

I see double positng has followed me to Frappr. Can we edit our shoutouts?

Posted by: erp at October 26, 2005 2:28 PM

And where the screeching is kept to a minimum.

Didn't know that Brothers Judd was particularly any color, red or blue.

Northwesters: please refer to this post below. Thanks.

Posted by: John Resnick at October 26, 2005 5:23 PM

oops. this post that is. sorry.

Posted by: John Resnick at October 26, 2005 5:26 PM

Even in the red states, the map shows posts from a lot of blue areas. Good sign.

Posted by: jdkelly at October 26, 2005 8:02 PM

The Other Brother just posted the button for the permanent link to this map, courtesy of jd watson's design skills.

I'm hesitant about the presumption of calling folks Juddites, though love the play on Luddites: how about Brothers' Hood?

If you're reading this, I've got a question for you as a fellow Omahan: When you entered your zip code, roughly how far off did they put you? There's certainly no need to give your address, but a sufficiently vague answer would be interesting. It's got you about halfway between Leavenworth and Grover, right off South 60th St. It put me near 132nd and Fort, but I'm actually closer to 108th and Maple.

Anybody else who wants to pipe in on how close they put you to your actual address, go right ahead.

Per your "shoutout," Nebraska wasn't red enough for you?

Here I was, thinking I was in the best of all possible worlds...

Where are our Canadian brethren?

Posted by: Dave W. at October 26, 2005 11:49 PM

OJ:

"Juddites" is by far the best.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at October 27, 2005 12:29 AM

I zoomed in on my dot on the satellite photo, and apparently I live in a cemetery. Who knew?

Posted by: Jim in Chicago at October 27, 2005 2:15 AM

Orrin:
I also thought "Juddites" to be relatively witty, given my limited wit. But then I'm only a grizzled desert lizard with a sun-baked brain.

Hi All -

Added mine. This is as good a time as any to say that I have moved from Atlanta, GA to Ringoes, NJ(my wife's job took us up here). What I have learned in the past 3 months is that all the Red State vs. Blue State cliches are essentially TRUE....

Posted by: Bruce Cleaver at October 27, 2005 7:58 AM

Cliches are all mostly true, that's why they're cliches.

Posted by: tefta at October 27, 2005 8:11 AM

Thanks for editing my shoutout.

Posted by: erp at October 27, 2005 8:18 AM

I like it too, but it seems to diminish the folks in the community somewhat.

Posted by: oj at October 27, 2005 8:31 AM

We're way cool.

Posted by: AllenS at October 27, 2005 8:53 AM

Matt Murphy: I tried to zoom in on my pin's location but the Frappr said that they didn't have any maps for my region (western Kentucky). I guess it isn't just Frankfort that thinks anything west of I-65 is beyond the pale.

Posted by: Bartman at October 27, 2005 9:41 AM

I'm in, with a lovely picture that my boy drew of me.

Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at October 27, 2005 4:46 PM

Bartman:

Sounds familiar. Zoom in on some of the more desolate places in western Nebraska and you'll read "Here there be dragons."

Posted by: Matt Murphy at October 27, 2005 7:14 PM

Surely OJ can post a picture of himself?

Posted by: Matt Murphy at October 27, 2005 7:16 PM

Matt, don't write things like that, even in jest!

Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at November 13, 2005 8:25 PM

Matt:

You're in for an unpleasant surprise later this week.

Posted by: oj at November 13, 2005 8:47 PM

The pelt! It's gotta be the pelt!

Posted by: ratbert at November 14, 2005 12:00 AM

OJ:

So where's this unpleasant surprise I've been promised?

Posted by: Matt Murphy at November 22, 2005 8:03 PM

Ask Ed Driscoll....

Posted by: oj at November 22, 2005 8:07 PM

OJ:

Just incidentally, this presumably updated, computerized map lists my old high school as "St. John's Seminary." It ceased being a seminary around 1970.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at December 9, 2005 5:25 PM

Matt, I recently attended my 40th reunion. Had dinner with a buddy who's an Omaha lawyer. I thought he refered to your school as Mount St. Mary's or something similar.

Posted by: jdkelly at December 9, 2005 6:37 PM

Matt:

I worked for a business geographics compant that generated nearly all the date that underlies the computer maps folks use. Our files on schools were from the 50s/early 60s at the height of the baby boom. We had something like 33% more schools in the product than now exist.

Posted by: oj at December 9, 2005 8:22 PM

jdkelly:

You have a very impressive memory. It's called Mount Michael. It's a boarding school run by Benedictine monks and is widely considered the best high school in Omaha (it's a source of pride to me that we consistently outplace Creighton Prep, which is probably the #2 school and is run by Jesuits).

My favorite hat -- I'm wearing it right now -- is a Mount Michael hat with the school logo "MM" on it. I love wearing it because it matches my initials.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at December 10, 2005 3:10 AM

OJ:

And yet -- oddly enough -- I'm still unable to find Pencey Prep, Hogwarts, or the French Academy of Military Valor.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at December 10, 2005 3:14 AM

Does it come in size 8?

Posted by: oj at December 10, 2005 7:30 AM

OJ:

You know, I actually think it does. Want me to order one for you? I probably owe you a Christmas gift for running such an enjoyable blog.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at December 10, 2005 5:20 PM

I'll take all the free stuff I can weasel out of this deal. The Wife would be so happy to see a package that wasn't a book...

Posted by: oj at December 10, 2005 5:26 PM

OJ:

I'll inquire about the availability of size eights and if I can purchase or special-order one I promise to send it (although it may arrive after Christmas and, come to think of it, I'll have to rig up some kind of package so it won't get smashed).

If you ever break the Time Zone Rule and come to Omaha, you'll have to attend a MM basketball game and make sure to wear that hat. It gets very loud in that place because our gym is about the size of a crackerbox and we have an endearingly-obnoxious student section that's like a miniature version of the Cameron Crazies. There's not an opponent on our schedule that wouldn't love to kick our asses out to the Nebraska Panhandle.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at December 10, 2005 9:01 PM

Sweet! My Sox hat is pretty tatty these days...

Posted by: oj at December 10, 2005 9:06 PM

OJ:

You shouldn't be wearing that thing anyway. ;-)

Posted by: Matt Murphy at December 10, 2005 9:50 PM

Given that no one has unlooped this yet, I presume no one is reading this far back.

Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at March 1, 2006 5:25 PM

Apparently not.
