Rounds signs SD abortion ban (Chet Brokaw, 03/06/06, Associated Press)

South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds on Monday signed into law a bill banning nearly all abortions, setting up a court fight aimed at challenging the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

The bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless it was necessary to save the woman's life. It would make no exception in cases of rape or incest.

Planned Parenthood, which operates the state's only abortion clinic in Sioux Falls, has pledged it will challenge the measure in court. About 800 abortions are done each year in South Dakota.

So, to put it bluntly: one group of fanatics kills 800 South Dakotans a year. And people worry about al Qaeda?

OJ,

What's worse (or better?), the doctors Planned Parenthood uses aren't even South Dakota-based. Every weekday morning, a doctor flies into Sioux Falls from the Twin Cities to perform the grisly deed at their "clinic."

I believe we can refer to such individuals as carpetbaggers, no?

Unfortunately, South Dakota jumped the gun. Since pro-abortion justices still control the Supreme Court, it is likely this law will be found unconstitutional. Now, when another vacancy opens on the Court, Chuck Schumer and the other liberals will able to cite this as bona fide proof that Roe vs. Wade is extremely vulnerable and that no pro-life justice should be appointed. No longer would Chuck Schumer's rants be considered paranoid fear-mongering.

Vince's point is valid.

Let me suggest, however, that this is war, and the pressure must be kept on. The initiative is to be maintained and the elan vital of our side is to be incited.

Remember, Ayotte changes everything. The Court will instruct the states as to how much of a slice we may carve from the pro-death carcass at this time.

Keep in mind also that those people are consciously adopting the tactic of pretending to move to the right. We cannot counter this deception unless we keep the pressure on..

Vince:

Of course, if the next vacancy occurs on Bush's watch, that just makes it more fun when we get the seat.
