DOESN'T THE LEFT DESERVE A PARTY OF ITS OWN? (via Pepys):

Enough of the D.C. Dems (Molly Ivins, March 2006, The Progressive)

Mah fellow progressives, now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of the party. I don’t know about you, but I have had it with the D.C. Democrats, had it with the DLC Democrats, had it with every calculating, equivocating, triangulating, straddling, hair-splitting son of a bitch up there, and that includes Hillary Rodham Clinton. [...]

As usual, the Democrats have forty good issues on their side and want to run on thirty-nine of them. Here are three they should stick to:

1) Iraq is making terrorism worse; it’s a breeding ground. We need to extricate ourselves as soon as possible. We are not helping the Iraqis by staying.

2) Full public financing of campaigns so as to drive the moneylenders from the halls of Washington.

3) Single-payer health insurance.

Every Democrat I talk to is appalled at the sheer gutlessness and spinelessness of the Democratic performance. The party is still cringing at the thought of being called, ooh-ooh, “unpatriotic” by a bunch of rightwingers.


She wants them to run on making America into Canada just weeks after Canadians voted to become more like America?

Come on, Democrats, you can do better. Why not come out really strongly for a new "Assault" "Weapons" "Ban?" Don't let those N.R.A. people push you around.

Lou, Governor Rod just came out for an assault weapons ban. Don't think it's going to hurt him here in Illinois. Hope it does, but it won't.

Remember, Ivins is the woman who helped George W. Bush become president, because -- as the liberals' go-to reporter for all things Texas -- she convinced the media and most Democrats in D.C. that Shrub was a drooling idiot who would fall apart in the 2000 election at the first sign of Al Gore's titanic mental skills. So the fact that Molly's getting an early start on making sure John McCain wins the 2008 presidential vote shouldn't be any surprise.

Don't know about the other 37 issues, but the 3 Molly chose are notable for self-styled Progressives being wrong on the facts as well as the politics, demonstrating the triumph of ideology over reality. Which captures the left in a nutshell.
