HEIR APPARENT (via Timothy Goddard):

George Bush's Campaign Team Joining John McCain (NewsMax, 2/07/06)

With the 2008 presidential election less than three years away, more than a few members of President Bush's campaign team have begun to migrate to the current GOP frontrunner, Sen. John McCain.

According to Newsweek magazine, Mark McKinnon, Bush's longtime media adviser, has told the president he's ready to leap aboard McCain's "Straight Talk Express," unless brother Jeb or Condoleezza Rice change their minds and get into the race.

Among Bush fundraisers, the biggest catch, says Newsweek, is Tom Loeffler, a former congressman from San Antonio, who is a Bush-family loyalist and helped build Bush's money machine in 2000.

Ron Weiser, who was Bush's finance chairman in Michigan in 2000, has also joined McCain.

New contest: pick the date W endorses him....

I can see Bush staying neutral with regard to McCain unless he has to weigh in. Of course they could make Jeb as VP the condition for the endorsement.

Does the date have to be before the convention? I don't think any endorsement will be forthcoming unless and until McCain is the nominated candidate.

If Allen runs as the "respectable" conservative candidate (as opposed to, say, Congressman Tancredo), Bush will still have to wait until the primary races are pretty much decided before endorsing him, in part to make sure McCain doesn't drop some sound bite bomb in New Hampshire or some other early primary site that makes the media happy and outrages the GOP conservative base (The fact that the Bush staff is heading over there now is no doubt in part an effort to make sure that faux pas doesn't happen, given how much the networks and big city papers will be baiting the senator to do a full Obama on the economic and social conservatives between now and 2008).

So....if McCain is the GOP frontrunner, who's the VP frontfunner?
