CLEARLY NOT A ROVE OP:

Cheney Accidentally Shoots Fellow Hunter (NEDRA PICKLER, 2/12/06, Associated Press)

Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was "alert and doing fine" in a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday after he was shot by Cheney on a ranch in south Texas, said Katharine Armstrong, the property's owner.

It was, of course, supposed to be Mr. Cheney who got shot, so that Condi could finish his term....

Chenney thought it was Pat Leahy.

The MSNBC reporter actually used the phrase: "...what the White House is calling a hunting accident."

Posted by: Peter B at February 12, 2006 8:11 PM

Oh, why couldn't it be a MSNBC reporter?

Posted by: sam at February 12, 2006 8:13 PM

Nice pic of the Veep. He looks as if he's just finished dining on the bones of small handicapped children, and now fortified, will continue his business as a broker in buying and selling souls.

Sheesh.

I was thinking at first that Cheney shot Adam Clymer, Mr. Big-time himself.

Posted by: Jim in Chicago at February 12, 2006 9:20 PM

My wife made the comment about the picture, too, but I'm not sure that I could have refrained myself. He did shoot the guy, after all.

Odds are the vice-president might face a citation and will have to take a hunter's safety course before his next trip into Texas. As long as the rules of the accident investigation and final report are followed, I don't see this as being anything more than a 2-3 day story for the news departments, but it will a new long-lasting file entry for the late-night comics (which would mean something if Cheney was running for president in 2008).

Sorry John, this will be the story of the week for the DU/MSM crowd. "Darth" Cheney shoots someone on a hunting trip? It's just a matter of time before someone on the left tries to claim it wasn't an accident.

Posted by: Robert Modean at February 13, 2006 2:33 AM

Oh, I have no doubt even as we type, folks on the left and at some of the more partisan media outlets have been researching Harry Whittington's life story to find out what connections he has with others that would lead him to be in need of "silencing". But that's for the fever swamps that are still trying to show that George Bush stole the 2000 election.

We'll get the hyperactive stories this morning in the big media outlets, the Whittington lfe history on Tuesday and then the accident report from Texas Parks & Wildlife and or the Department of Public Safety after that. Unless Whittington has become totally embittered by his sudden wounding, the big media outlets can only bead this shotgun pellet-ridden dead horse for so long.

Rick Perlstein says they waited to see if he died before reporting it because they were going to cover it up if he did.

Posted by: oj at February 13, 2006 8:18 AM

By stuffing him in a car and driving him off a bridge perhaps?

Posted by: Genecis at February 13, 2006 10:08 AM

One minor point I'd like to bring up. I've seen lots of media reports saying the guy was hit with buckshot. Now, I'm not a shotgun hunter but isn't buckshot for larger animals (hence the name)? I suspect they were probably using bird shot which is why he is alive. Correct me if I am wrong.

Is this another example of the the fundamental misunderstanding by the media of the basics of a particular area? Kinda like saying Cincinnati Bengals' Quarterback Carson Palmer was injured on the first play of the game when the Steelers tried to sack him before Palmer threw the basketball.

Posted by: pchuck at February 13, 2006 10:35 AM

Since the guy appears to be doing ok.

Cheney: "Pull.....Oh, that was the last lawyer."

Posted by: pchuck at February 13, 2006 10:42 AM

"Katharine Armstrong, one of the ranch's owners, saw what happened Saturday and told reporters yesterday that Cheney was using a 28-gauge shotgun, which shoots fewer pellets and has a smaller shot pattern than a 12-gauge shotgun, making it harder to hit the target. Whittington was about 30 yards away when he was hit in the cheek, neck and chest, she said.

According to Armstrong's account, she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail. Whittington shot a bird and as he went to retrieve it, Cheney and the third hunter discovered a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said, according to the Associated Press."

They don't need to shoot anybody to make Condi the VP. They have an undated note from Cheney's doctor.

I'm surprised Perlstein is so unimaginative. I mean, if Cheney et al were really what he thinks they are, wouldn't they have just delivered a coup de grace to the injured hunterand then gotten rid of the body so as to avoid the embarassment?

C'mon Rick, think man, think.

Surprised they allow Rick access to email in whatever black ops site the Fascist Bushies ship the enemies of the state to.)

The White House press corps are at this moment badgering McClellan about "the shooting": When was the President was informed? Why wasn't he awakened? And has Mr. Cheney submitted a resignation letter?

Posted by: Gideon at February 13, 2006 1:07 PM

David Gregory (NBC): "Why was the White House relying on a Texas rancher to get the word of Cheney's hunting accident out over the weekend", asked Gregory, accusing McClellan of 'ducking and weaving.'

"David, hold on… the cameras aren't on right now," McClellan replied. "You can do this later."

"Don't accuse me of trying to pose to the cameras," the newsman said, his voice rising somewhat. "Don’t be a jerk to me personally when I’m asking you a serious question."

"You don't have to yell," McClellan said.

"I will yell," said Gregory, pointing a finger at McClellan at his dais. "If you want to use that podium to try to take shots at me personally, which I don’t appreciate, then I will raise my voice, because that’s wrong."

"Calm down, Dave, calm down," said McClellan, remaining calm throughout the exchange.

"I'll calm down when I feel like calming down," Greogry said. "You answer the question."

"I have answered the question," said McClellan, who had maintained that the vice president's office was in charge of getting the information out and worked with the ranch owner to do that. "I'm sorry you're getting all riled up about it."

"I am riled up," Gregory said, "because you’re not answering the question."

Gideon;

Dude, I thought that was a parody you'd clipped from IMAO.

None of us think David Gregory is important, either.

Someone should go interview his mother, and ask him if he was like this as a child.

Or interview his wife (if he is married).

Good to see that Scott McClellan seems to be getting much better at 'handling' the press.

pchuck -

Buckshot is common in dove and quail hunting, since you want the shot to spread out to boost the chance of hitting the moving taget.

My friend had the same thing happen to him about five years ago, when his young nephew nailed him with buckshot while on a dove hunt. He spent six days in the hospital and ended up sptting out one of the shot pellets that worked its way through his neck, but otherwise survived the ordeal with little damage other than the permanent buckshot scars in his upper shoulder.

Pchuck is right about the birdshot-buckshot question. John is mistaken.

The Cheney accident was just that. Safe hunting practices should have prevented it. Hunters must be aware of the location of all hunting partners and have pre-planned safe zones of fire. If you don't know that the shot is safe, you don't take it, period.

Seriously, could you find a photo of Dick Cheney that doesn't make him look "as if he's just finished dining on the bones of small handicapped children, and now fortified, will continue his business as a broker in buying and selling souls?"

I happen to like Pope Benedict XVI, but that doesn't stop me from thinking "Pope Sidious" every time I see his photo.

Cheney's picture appears doctored up. Remember what the media did to Harris during Gore's attempted coup d'etat. Made her look like a tart and then critized her heavy makeup.
