TALK ABOUT NOT GETTING IT:
Not everyone gives up lobbyist-linked cash (DEVLIN BARRETT, January 6, 2006, Chicago Sun-Times)
While dozens of lawmakers are dumping contributions from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his clients, others including Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid smell no taint and plan to keep the money. [....]Others who plan to keep Abramoff-related money include Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), with $41,000; Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), $42,500, and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), $10,000.
It's times like this when you see how desperately the Democrats need a leader. Posted by Orrin Judd at January 6, 2006 8:45 AM
It funny how you have the ability to take any story that could conceivably threaten Republicans, and flip it around to stick it to the Democrats. Are the Republicans ever guilty?

Yes, they're deeply guilty--that's the point. How can the Democrats squander even the issues where they have a point?
Posted by: oj at January 6, 2006 9:30 AMIt will be hard for the Dems to argue Abraham contributions to GOPers are evil when they took them and don't give them back. Or do they expect the MSM to cover for them as usual?
Posted by: AWW at January 6, 2006 10:24 AMPerhaps Abramoff was paying reporters, too. If I had been in his position, I would have.
Posted by: jim hamlen at January 6, 2006 10:48 AMNo, this shows that the Democrats need a GOOD leader. It's obvious that Reid doesn't have any intention of going down, so he's ordered the troops to stand with him, and they are complying.
The Indian tribes are the ones who should be terrified right now--Congress is going to turn on them ferociously.
Posted by: b at January 6, 2006 10:48 AMIndian tribes that have been giving this great amount of money to buy influence, are paying these crooks to not allow other Indian tribes from opening their own casinos. Anything to stop that practice will be good for the smaller, more rural tribes.
Posted by: AllenS at January 6, 2006 11:07 AMI've been telling my hubby for a couple of years now we need to take care of the Indian problem.
Posted by: Sandy P at January 6, 2006 11:27 AMThe Indians in Washington State OWN the democrats and something needs to be done soon to moderate this influence. Most recently Gov. Gregoire tried to approve a new compact for a Spokane tribe that would have allowed tribes an unlimited number of tables, thousands more slots and casinos to be built off the reservation all in exchange for tribes giving a small amount of their proceeds to the state in taxes. Of course this would have resulted in a tribal casino free for all where they could have put casinos pretty much wherever they want. Luckily this leaked out and she had to distance herself from her own proposal.
Posted by: Patrick H at January 6, 2006 12:21 PMNote also that what got Abramoff in trouble was his taking of money that was supposed to be used for influence, and never delivering. The money that The Best Senate Delegation Money Can Buy (Upper Left Washingon's Dynamic Duo) won't return was money given to them on the direction of Abramoff, so technically they are correct. But this "insensitivity to the appearance of impropriety" will hurt themonly if the press make an issue of it. We know they never will, thanks to thinking like that Grog has demonstrated. The GOP won't, because while they may be the Stupid Party, they aren't that stupid. But as pointed out, the Tribes have been getting mighty uppity, and everyone (except them) can profit from slapping them around a bit.
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at January 6, 2006 12:45 PMIsn't Cantwell still in the hole from her campaign? Or did someone finally pay that off for her?
