PRIVACY DOESN'T SELL:

Anti-Alito push fails to sway U.S. (Charles Hurt, January 4, 2006, THE WASHINGTON TIMES)

Despite a major coordinated campaign, liberal interest groups have failed to convince the American public that the Senate should reject Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito Jr.

Every major poll indicates that far more voters think Judge Alito should be confirmed than think he should be rejected. Though that support generally is lower than it was for John G. Roberts Jr. before his confirmation for chief justice in the fall, it is on par with the public support for Supreme Court nominees during the past 20 years.

But just wait'll the public finds out he opposes abortion on demand and supports spying on terrorists!

Iraq is not Vietnam, there is no draft, and behold, all things are made new.

BTW, we might recall earlier discussions in which it was posited that the Miers nomination was a deception calculated to draw fire and thus expend those people's resources, especially their claim on public notice, before the real attack. If the only people still paying attention are the extreme baby-murderers and the Cindy Sheehan crowd, the opposition to Alito looks like the fringe rant that it is.

The tactic is analogous to the amphibious feints presented at Saipan in WWII and Kuwait in GWI. You get the enemy to defend the wrong place at the wrong time and he is weakened at the true point of decision.

Lou Gots: I agree. Many months ago Americans got sick of hearing about Democrats gripes with Bush's judicial nominees, now no one cares. In addition, at the time Bush nominated Miers, there were a number of other simultaneously indictments that received little address due to the internal bickering of the Republicans over Miers. So Bush killed two birds with one stone, in a way.
