PRE-EMPTION, NOT REACTION:

France defends right to nuclear reply to terrorism (Elizabeth Pineau, Jan 19, 2006, Reuters)

France said on Thursday it would be ready to use nuclear weapons against any state that carried out a terrorist attack against it, reaffirming the need for its nuclear deterrent.

Deflecting criticism of France's costly nuclear arms program, President Jacques Chirac said security came at a price and France must be able to hit back hard at a hostile state's centers of power and its "capacity to act."

France doesn't need nukes and shouldn't be permitted to have them--when they do get hit they'll rely on us to take care of the problem anyway.

I'm not sure I mind if the French expend their nukes taking down Iran's nukes . . . saves us the trouble.

If their nucelar weapons are anything like their nuclear aircraft carrier, I'd be building lead-lined deep underground bomb shelters if I lived in Italy, Greece or Turkey.

They're manufactured by Citroen and Peugeot. What makes you think they'll malfunction?

France won't bomb anybody with anything. They just heard ".....Strike" and got all excited.

We should let them do it, for their own sake. The other night Jay Leno displayed a gag "French Army Knife," with a little fold-out white flag, and of course all that "cheese eating surrender monkeys" business.

They could even get somebody to tow the Charles deGaulle down to the gulf. It would do them a world of good.

The French may not play well with others, but they definitely know their self-interest. And they can be firm in asserting it; remember that Greenpeace incident a while back? That was the coolest thing France ever did.
