GEORGE W. CITIZEN:

Jury duty is for Everyman - and some presidents (Kris Axtman, 1/10/06, The Christian Science Monitor)

[B]ecause he believes it's an important civic responsibility, Mr. Bush has rescheduled his service. The local judge has offered him a little latitude, what with all that work back East, so the president can choose from several dates in the next six months. The first is Jan. 30.

"He could just show up, but I hope he lets us know with enough time to meet all the security issues," says Karen Matkin, district clerk of McLennan County. "We've never had to deal with anything like this before."

I'm sorry but it is stupid for the President of the US to waste time on jury duty. What are the chances any lawyer in a criminal case will let him on a jury? So, he'll read the sports page all day.

The local judge obviously likes the publicity. Otherwise, he would sua sponte quash the summons.

Tom Kean and John Kerry have both been seated on juries without lawyer objection. The President's time is no more valuable than anyone elses.

The downside to getting out of Jury Duty would be large as well.

By going, the President is baiting the left into making the elitist case that president's are too important to go to Jury duty.

This is another Bushian plot. Every president had this taken care of in advance. Only Bush would have made sure he was called.

Strategery.

The President's time is no more valuable than anyone else's.

Yeah, right. No one can type that without chuckling at the absurdity of the statement.

As Bruno suggests, this is simply political theater.
