WHY WE'RE NO LONGER THEISTS IN NEW ENGLAND:

Red Sox deal Renteria to Braves for Marte (ESPN.com, 12/08/05)

The Braves and Red Sox have agreed on a deal that would ship shortstop Edgar Renteria to Atlanta in exchange for Braves third-base prospect Andy Marte, ESPN's Peter Gammons has learned.

Unbelievably good trade, so long as they aren't just using him to get Julio Lugo.

Ha. Now watch him have a big year.

He's a good shortstop, but no different than about 8 other guys, including Lugo. Meanwhile, Marte is the best offensive prospect in baseball. The great thing would be if they bring back Nomar at ss for Renteria money.

Ugh. This off season is a turning into a disaster. The team wihtout the GM is destorying everyone else.

"Marte, 22, batted .275 with 20 homers and 74 RBI in 109 games in Triple-A last season, and .140 with no homers and four RBI in 24 games with the Braves."

Best offensive prospect in baseball? Man, the minors must suck.

Marte is the most overrated offensive prospect in baseball. The Braves finally gave in to the obvious.

An entirely typical year for a guy who gets sent down when he should be starting in the majors.

Delmon Young is a much better offensive prospect than Marte.

That said, the Red Sox are doing the right thing giving up on the next year or two and trying to get younger.

But Delmon is an of--good hitting ofs fall out of trees. The Prince is great too, but an immobile 1b.

With Chipper Jones locked in long term and no place for him to play other than 3B, this is the best deal the Braves could have hoped for. Marte may be a winner, who can tell for sure, but right now the Braves are loaded with talent in the minors. And given their record over the last several years, their prospects bring more than other prospects-- kind of like the Dodgers back in the 60's and 70's.
