WHAT THE...?:

A parent's right to know (Jonathan Turley, 12/05/05, USA Today)

Cases like Ayotte are produced by a collision of two powerful interests: The right of parents to participate in major medical and moral decisions affecting their minor children vs. the right of children to have abortions.

What cousin Jonathan writes is correct when one considers it's parents right vs. death lobby (NARAL, etc.) politics.

Folks like Jerry Falwell & Pat Robertson, who like to claim that God has punished New Orleans/Disneyworld/America/etc. for their sins are loons. But sometimes you sure do wonder why He stays His hand...

Mr. Turley sounds as confused as Sandra Day O'Connor.

Notice that parents only get a right to "participate" in decision-making, not to actually make decisions. Whereas the children's right to abortion is unqualified. What Turley leaves unwritten is his presumption that the government has the "right" to be the final decision-maker about the child.

Luciferous:

Perfect.

Has Howard Dean commented on the case? I'm sure he has a biting medical comment to add to the debate. And I'm sure he believes he knows best about witholding medical information to parents.

How did a simple medical procedure become the most absolute of all rights, the one to which all other rights must yield?

Posted by: Raoul Ortega at December 6, 2005 3:06 PM

Because it's the most dehumanizing?

Posted by: erp at December 6, 2005 5:23 PM

Who is paying for the procedure?

Who is paying for the procedure?

I think it's usually the 14-year-old girl's 25-year-old boyfriend...

And that, to a considerable extent, is why it has become "the most absolute of all rights."
