Sources: Menendez tapped for U.S. Senate seat (Mark Preston, 12/0-7/05, CNN)

New Jersey Gov.-elect Jon Corzine will name Rep. Robert Menendez, chairman of the Democratic Caucus, as his successor in the U.S. Senate, multiple New Jersey Democratic sources told CNN Wednesday.

Menendez will serve the remaining year of Corzine's Senate term in 2006 while launching his own campaign for a full six-year term, the sources said.

The blacks or the Judds?

What's the difference?

Resisting the urge to make puerile penile jokes.

Eric and Lyle or the Judds?

Don't know much about NJ politics but it appears Mendenez will be good enough to hold the seat against Kean barring a Dem meltdown in NJ.

Not if the GOP plays black resentment right.

OJ - has it ever?

Yes, remember Ed Rollins?

Posted by: oj at December 7, 2005 11:14 PM

Ed Rollins used traditional Democratic Party tactics ("walking around Money").

Do you think Republicans can sink to such depravity again?

Posted by: h-man at December 8, 2005 5:12 AM

Depravity? It's a contribution to the churches.

Posted by: oj at December 8, 2005 7:16 AM

I was being sarcastic. As I recall Rollins was attacked for using the same tactics as Democrats and even Christine Whitman, the beneficiary, turned against him.

Now I get it. Weren't the Menendez brothers a pair from So. Cal. who killed their wealthy father and were acquited because they were orphans or something like that?

Posted by: Robert Schwartz at December 8, 2005 1:29 PM

Robert, Yes, Eric and Lyle.

Posted by: jdkelly at December 8, 2005 2:46 PM

Acquited? Last I heard the Menendez brothers were convicted of killing their mother and their father and are in jail serving life sentences.

Posted by: erp at December 8, 2005 2:52 PM

Of course they were convicted - they reloaded the shotgun and fired into the bodies (at least of their mother, as I remember). Not even the blond lefty shrink could get past that little detail.

Sometimes a pol simply does a good job of supporting his constituency. Anyone who knows about Newark, NJ, politics or the politics of the surrounding area knows that Menendez has been Congressman Pothole to his voters. He has done well by them. As a former New Jerseyan, although I do not share his politics, I am not surprised by his ascension. He has earned it, and, thereby, has earned the right to be a member of the disloyal opposition in the Senate.

Sure, I would prefer it if the next NJ Senator was a Pub, but it will not happen. NJ, despite a sizeable number of Pubs squirreled away into Democratic districts, is a Blue state. Remember this as the DeLay trial unfolds.

All politics is local. That's the genius of the Federal system, right?

All best,

Tom Kean's dad never had much trouble getting elected.
