SING IN LATIN, AT MIDNIGHT MASS, FOR THE FULL EFFECT:

O Come All Ye Faithful : Lyrics

O Come All Ye Faithful
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

O Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing all that hear in heaven God's holy word.
Give to our Father glory in the Highest;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

All Hail! Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning,
O Jesus! for evermore be Thy name adored.
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Adeste Fideles

Adeste Fideles
Laeti triumphantes
Venite, venite in Bethlehem
Natum videte
Regem angelorum
Venite adoremus, Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus, Dominum

Cantet nunc io
Chorus angelorum
Cantet nunc aula caelestium
Gloria, gloria
In excelsis Deo
Venite adoremus, Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus, Dominum

Ergo qui natus
Die hodierna
Jesu, tibi sit gloria
Patris aeterni
Verbum caro factus
Venite adoremus, Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus, Dominum

Midnight Mass. In Latin. Then, it rocks!

Mike Morley:

An all-Latin midnight Christmas mass is something I want to see before I die.

Not just any Latin. JPII used Polish-style, i.e., Ciceronian, Latin with hard initial "c's," siballant final "s's," and trilled "r's."

Before John Paul the Great, church Latin was little more than Latin words pronounced in Italian.

Certainly not an achievement of the order of the Great Exorcism, but a contribution nonetheless.

You don't just need the Latin, the mass needs to be celebrated ad orientem at a high altar.

Matt- There's always "next year in Chicago"

Funny, that's the only Christmas hymn I learned in elementary school that was in latin.

Jim in Chicago:

Hmmm, interesting...very interesting. I've been meaning to see Chicago someday and I work for a hotel company so I can get a cheap room. Any other special Christmas stuff to see if I'm up there?

The only problem is that obviously I'd have to travel in December and 1.) It's cold, and 2.) I couldn't see a Cubs game.
