SCRATCH A GENOCIDAL MANIAC FIND AN APPLIED DARWINIST (via Brian Boys):
Stalin's half-man, half-ape super-warriors (CHRIS STEPHEN AND ALLAN HALL, 12/20/05, The Scotsman)
THE Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered the creation of Planet of the Apes-style warriors by crossing humans with apes, according to recently uncovered secret documents.Moscow archives show that in the mid-1920s Russia's top animal breeding scientist, Ilya Ivanov, was ordered to turn his skills from horse and animal work to the quest for a super-warrior.
According to Moscow newspapers, Stalin told the scientist: "I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat."
The problem with Homo Sovieticus was one of the soul, not the genes. Posted by Orrin Judd at December 20, 2005 6:04 PM

Cut the Creation vs Evolution crowing; the parallel isn't to Darwin, it's to Tolkien as filtered through Jackson:
"YOU DO NOT KNOW FEAR! YOU DO NOT KNOW PAIN! MY FIGHTING URUK-HAI!"

Posted by: AllenS at December 20, 2005 6:39 PMUncle Joe's Killer Soviet Communist Man-Apes! Were it not for Hollywood's traditional political leanings, they could make this one into the comedy of the century.
Posted by: John at December 20, 2005 8:36 PMSurprised Ivanov couldn't find a way to beg off the assignment - it surely occured to him that failure meant death.
OTOH, maybe the primitive state of knowledge at that time meant the Soviets genuinely thought such a thing possible.
Posted by: Bruce Cleaver at December 20, 2005 8:40 PMThis is what Communism is supposed to be all about. The Vanguard of the proletariat weilds the apparatus of state coercion to create a new kind of man.
What passed for soviet :science" was not Darwinism, but rather Lamarkism gone wild in what came to be called Lysenkoism. Lysenko, we may recall "proved" that grains could be commanded by the Party to grow at new latitudes and thus made a major contribution to the perennial Communist crop failure.
One would think that Soviet "science" would enjoy the same level of esteem as Nazi race science, unless one has looked inside the textbooks used in our schools of education. One Vygotsky, one of Stalin's pyschologists, is presented to American Education students as an inportant contributor to teaching theory, which should tell us all we need to know about teacher colleges.

Posted by: Lou Gots at December 20, 2005 8:45 PMAfter producing Brezhnev they obviously started having doubts about the program.
Posted by: Barry Meislin at December 21, 2005 2:54 AMWhat I see in that whole project was not Darwin -- or anything to do with evolution -- but a wanna-be Dark Lord trying to manufacture his own Uruk-Hai.
"WHOM DO YOU SERVE?"
"STALIIIIIN!"
Posted by: Ken at December 21, 2005 4:01 PMBelief that you can is Darwinian.
Posted by: oj at December 21, 2005 4:06 PMIf the belief that you can make evolution happen is Darwinian then the belief that you can make things fall down is Newtonian.
In other words, the 911 attack is all Isaac Newton's fault.

Push a book off your desk. What happened?
Now demonstrate Darwinism in action.
