REARGUARD ACTION (via The Other Brother):

Evolution takes science honours (Paul Rincon, 12/23/05, BBC News)

Research into how evolution works has been named top science achievement of 2005, a year that also saw fierce debate erupt over "intelligent design".

As it slips away the seek to reassure themselves that all is well...

While Orrin tries to reassure himself that "it slips away", the theory of evolution continues to be confirmed by ongoing research and ID is defeated both in the courts (by a Republican-appointed judge) and in the court of public opinion (in a red-state demographic), and that's before ID has even postulated a hypothesis.

"Research into how evolution works..."

There's something vaguely oxymoronic about that headline. It gives off the feel that its only one step removed from those "Science of Star Trek" books.

Oymoronic how?

Posted by: creeper at December 23, 2005 6:31 PM

Take heart OJ... there is plenty of room for you in my philosophy...just keep talking, honestly!

Posted by: oldkayaker at December 23, 2005 6:38 PM

Sam Harris and I and lots of secular humanists will make room for you. We will welcome you and make you feel at home. Really!

Posted by: oldkayaker at December 23, 2005 6:40 PM

13% and falling...it's the not getting the oxymoronic quality that always gives them away.

Posted by: oj at December 23, 2005 6:42 PM

ok:

If I wanted to feel at home with secular humanists I'd live in Europe, like creeper and Brit, not America.

"13% and falling"

Umm... can't go much below 1%

Posted by: creeper at December 23, 2005 7:19 PM

OK, You and Sam are on the darkling plain. Good luck. Keep whistling.

Posted by: jdkelly at December 23, 2005 7:55 PM

Yeah, me and Sam and oldkayaker voted out the school board in Dover.

Posted by: creeper at December 23, 2005 8:00 PM

Even Rick Santorum, who wrote Darwinism out of schools in NCLB dumped the Board. We don't need to cheat to get a new religion into schools, just tell the truth to get the old one out.

Oh the society the three of you could build. You could call it the Fourth Reich...

Posted by: oj at December 23, 2005 8:33 PM

We are not waiting for Christ to return.... are you?

Posted by: oldkayaker at December 23, 2005 8:39 PM

Atheism is not science.

Posted by: ghostcat at December 23, 2005 8:40 PM

Indeed, Messianism is a requirement for a decent society. Secular rationalist always commit the heresy of thinking they can perfect things themselves, which is why they are always anti-human.

Posted by: oj at December 23, 2005 8:41 PM

OK. Yes.

No one has discussed the studies cited making evolution the top scientific achievement of 2005, towit: "... the sequencing of the chimpanzee genome; recreation of the 1918 flu virus in a laboratory; and a study on European blackcap birds which demonstrated how two different populations can become two separate species." The first two are examples of the unjustified presumption that any advances in genetics and molecular biology necessarily support evolutionary theory; the last seems to me tautologous -- if the populations are different, they are separate species by definition.

That such mundane results are considered so important is telling.

End of discussion... OJ doesn't want to hear any more Reason.

But, no one will see these comments...
