WHAT IS THE SOUND OF ONE MIND BOGGLING?

The Reliable Source: This Just In (Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts, Washington Post, 11/30/05)

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) says the NFL and Philadelphia Eagles are being unfair to wide receiver Terrell Owens, and he just might bring the matter to the antitrust subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee he chairs, so there. Just because Owens is a spoiled brat who humiliates his teammates and ruins their season is no reason for them to prevent him from playing or talking to other teams; it's "vindictive and inappropriate," said Specter. (The Eagles deactivated Owens on Sunday after a four-game suspension; an arbitrator ruled the action was supported by terms of the player's contract.)
Chalk one up for K-Lo.

Specter is backing away from this, probably because someone on his staff told him that Eagle fans hate Owens more than the team's record. In addition, old Snarlin' Arlen might recognize a spoiled, pouty brat when he sees one.

He agreed to postpone the Alito hearing until January because there was not enough time before the end of the year for the Judiciary Committee to hold such hearing. Was it because he and others were wasting their time on matters such as this?

This illustrates why members of Congress need to be docked a day's pay for every day they set foot on Capitol Hill. Barring that useful reform, however, the virtue of Arlen's fiddling with nonsense like this is that it leaves him less time to screw up something important.
