WE TOO COULD BE EVIL:
Good cop, bad neighbor (John Gershman, 11/18/05, Asia Times)
Part of China's success has been achieved by what some analysts describe as China's "good neighbor" policy - it expands bilateral and regional cooperation without hectoring on issues such as the "war on terrorism", human rights or economic liberalization. While this policy has been received with cautious acclaim by the region's leaders (especially in Southeast Asia), it offers some guidance to how the US could pursue a different strategy.
You're not actually a good neighbor if you don't mind that the guy next door beats his wife and molests his children, though he will appreciate your collaboration. Posted by Orrin Judd at November 17, 2005 8:41 AM
You also don't protect him unconditionally if the police come to the house and say he just beat up another neighbor's son and sold drugs to someone's daughter a few blocks down the street.
Posted by: John at November 17, 2005 9:01 AMChina's bilateral cooperation "without hectoring" includes it cosy relationship with Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe is short on friends in the Western world. Zimbabwe cherishes the absence of much-needed hectoring from its co-dictatorship to the east. Fortunately, all dictatorships eventually over-reach and fall.
Posted by: John J. Coupal at November 17, 2005 10:18 AMSometimes, the United States stops hectoring dictators. Sometimes, it actually sends troops to overthrow them. Good.
Posted by: X at November 17, 2005 10:32 AMJohn Gershman should ask people in Taiwan and HK if mainland China is a "good neighbor." Have him travel to Nepal to ask Tibetans what they think of China's neighborliness. Ask Vietnam.
Posted by: J at November 17, 2005 11:49 AMGershman is typical of a certain kind of American. For him, it's always wrong when America hectors other countries, even when we're right. But when other countries hector us, it's always our fault, even when they're wrong.
Of course, America isn't perfect. But everytime I return to this country from abroad, I always want to kiss the earth. It is a land where my children and my children's children won't have to worry about being murdered by self-righteous and self-proclaimed saviors of the people.
