SAME AS IT EVER WAS:

America's First War on Islamic Terror (Orrin Judd, 11/14/2005, Tech Central Station)

Joshua E. London's new book on America's Barbary Wars -- Victory in Tripoli : How America's War with the Barbary Pirates Established the U.S. Navy and Shaped a Nation -- draws fascinating parallels to the current War on Terror. The following is an interview with the author, conducted in October 2005.

Another must-read book. And just in time for Christmas. And they say the quality of life is declining in America......

I'm about a third of the way through it (thanks again, oj). The political intrigue part is fascinating, but I'm about ready for the Marines to open up a can of whupass.

Actually Ted there weren't that many Marines involved; it was very much a Navy show.

I'd like to add to the author's comments, that a great display on the Barbary Wars exists at the Naval museum, located steps from the U.S.S. Constitution at the Boston Navy Yard. If you visit the ship and are interested, plan at least a half day in the museum. The war and period is wonderfully brought to life.

And Ted, as an old former Marine, I'll relate the little known fact that the First Marine Officer to be killed in combat met his end leading a boarding party from the deck of "Old Ironsides" ... and his name was ... Bush.
