EVEN THE CANUCKS MIGHT GET SOMETHING TO BE THANKFUL FOR...:

Opposition parties introduce historic motion (Alexander Panetta, November 24, 2005, Canadian Press)

The opposition parties introduced an historic motion on Thursday, declaring that the House of Commons has lost confidence in the minority Liberal government.

A vote on the non-confidence motion is expected Monday, with the collapse of the government and a subsequent election campaign all but certain.

If the government expires, the motion will offer a succinct epitaph: "That this House has lost confidence in the government."

The Government lost a somewhat similar vote 2 months ago - and ignored it! This time they may not get away with that arrogant attitude.

Actually, it was back in the Spring, and they managed to survive thanks to Chuck Candman's tie breaking vote. But they don't have him to rescue them this time (didn't he die shortly after?) they way they did back in the Spring, and with the NDP on the "no confidence" side, the vote won't even be close.

So, who did this six month extention help? Obviously the NDP seems to think they've gotten all they can out of their Lib partners, and it's time to call for a new deck to deal from. There were some polls that showed that the Conservatives might have been able to form a minority gov't if the election was back in June, but will they be able to come January? Or did the Libs just put off the inevitable by giving everyone 6 months to see their scandals grow?
