UP OR DOWN AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH
MCCAIN STATEMENT ON THE NOMINATION OF HARRIET E. MIERS
For Immediate ReleaseIf McCain still hopes to be president, he'd better be willing to carry Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court on his back. Posted by David Cohen at October 5, 2005 9:43 PM

Washington, D.C. – Senator McCain released the following statement today regarding the nomination for Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States.I commend the President for his nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States. Over the course of thirty years, Ms. Miers has accumulated vast experience as a legal practitioner, led her peers as the head of state and local bar associations, and worked tirelessly as a dedicated public servant. Her record is one of deep commitment to the law and service to our nation. If the Senate confirms Ms. Miers, she will be only the third woman to have served on the highest court of our nation. Her accomplishments demonstrate that the distinction would be well deserved. I trust that Ms. Miers will have a smooth confirmation process and receive a swift up-or-down vote in the Senate.
I believe he just volunteered to do precisely that.

Posted by: oj at October 5, 2005 10:12 PMAll he seems to be doing in this statement is announcing to the other 13 that he doesn't consider this an extraordinary circumstance, so he's not going to allow a filibuster. He doesn't even say that he's going to vote for her.
Posted by: David Cohen at October 5, 2005 10:18 PMRight.
Posted by: ghostcat at October 5, 2005 10:21 PMI officially predict that Senator McCain will NOT be elected President of the United States of America, in November of 2008.
This prediction is not due to anything that he's done surrounding the Justice picks - this just seemed like a good thread to go on the record in.

Get in line, Herdegen.
Posted by: David Cohen at October 5, 2005 11:00 PMI second that emotion!
Posted by: obc at October 5, 2005 11:37 PMMiers offers McCain an opportunity to (re)establish his bona fides with Evangelicals. He will not pass up that chance.

So I'm # 9 on the "Not McCain" rolls.
Your position is that McCain WON'T RUN, which isn't quite the same thing.
I agree that if you are correct, your point encompasses mine, but how do you rate McCain's chances if he DOES run ?

David, Michael
Put me on the list, but only because of the age factor. He'll be 72 in the fall of 2008. Granted that Dole made a reasonable run at age 73, not to mention Reagan (69), I find it hard to believe that McCain will have the vigor to make much of a showing. He doesn't seem like the jogging or mountain bike type. It will only take one video shot of him shuffling to the microphone to end the entire campaign.
Posted by: h-man at October 6, 2005 4:16 AMMichael: There's only one primary that matters in '08; the George W. Bush primary. If he tells me to vote for McCain, I'll vote for McCain. If he tells me to vote for Miers, I'll vote for Miers. If he tells me to vote for Herdegen, I'll vote for Herdegen.
Posted by: David Cohen at October 6, 2005 8:12 AMDavid: Now I'm confused. If McCain's not running, how can 'W' tell me to vote for him?
Posted by: John Resnick at October 6, 2005 10:42 AMJohn: If he's not running, how else can he become president?
