SHE JUST LOST THE NEOCON VOTE:

US weighed military strikes in Syria (AFP, 10/09/05)

The United States recently debated launching military strikes inside Syria against camps used by insurgents operating in neighboring Iraq, a US magazine reported.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice successfully opposed the idea at a meeting of senior American officials held on October 1, Newsweek reported, citing unnamed US government sources.

Rice reportedly argued that diplomatic isolation was a more effective approach, with a UN report pending that may blame Syria for the assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri.

Tough October so far at NRO and the Weekly Standard.

Colin Powell in drag

what is it wih a normal sane rational clear thinking person that gets to State?

they lose all sense of what to do that will actually be GOOD for the US???????????

More likely, the purpose of the Oct 1 meeting was to discuss what story to leak for the purpose of putting additional diplomatic pressure on Syria. The "good cop" role in the story is always reserved for the diplomat, no surprise that Rice got the part.

I hope the bombing comes, but a story like this is no indication that it's close.

Baby Assad is, while a tin-pot despot thug, not in the habit of killing his own people with anything close to the regularity of Saddam Hussein. The need to pick him off is, while real, significantly less urgent than it was with Saddam. The slow squeeze is ust as likely to work as anything else. I certainly don't think that pundits, bloggers or this "busybody" fellow know more than, say Condi Rice, about how to pull it off.

Killing Assad has nothing to do with Syria per se; it is another step in Iraqi stability (and in isolating Iran and the terror groups).

This isn't about killing Assad, but bombing the terrorist camps. Assad's powerlessness to stop these attacks will bring him down from within.

CNN reported that for the last week, Iraq military with US forces embedded to provide back-up have successfully killed foreign invaders trying to murder the people of Iraq. This included a bombing mission last weekend by US jets along the Syrian-Iraqi border. CNN also shows that numerous thugs ran as fast as they could across the border back into Syria. From now until election day in Iraq, October 15, there will continue to be bombing missions to kill the thugs and barbarians trying to blow up the hope of millions of Iraqi people to escape the Dark Ages and live in peace. I find it strange that the loudest complaints are coming from Democrats and librerals who would rather see the US military leave Iraq with their tail between their legs and allow the entire nation of Iraq collapse into chaos and a civil war in a nation of 25 million Muslim people. They seem to forget the memory of Rwanda and Bosnia with massive genocide and disease from the stench of dead people left to the worms and the flies. Condoleezz Rice is correct to prevent US forces from invading Syria, (AT THIS TIME). We will see what happens in the next week as the Iraqi people vote YES or NO to support their new Constitution.
