SABATOGING YOUR OWN IDEOLOGY:
Don't like cops, till they need 'em (Dan Gross, 10/13/05, Philadelphia Inquirer)
Anarchist-run Wooden Shoe Books (508 S. 5th) has been a place where one could buy pro-Mumia Abu Jamal shirts and other anti-police merchandise.Posted by Orrin Judd at October 13, 2005 7:17 PMBut when the store was held up on the afternoon of Oct. 7 by a man who claimed he had a gun, guess who was called to help?
OJ, it's the rest of the story that's the real funny part,
"When we asked about the irony of an anti-police organization calling the cops when it's robbed, James Generic, a member of the volunteer collective that operates the not-for-profit bookstore, said, "It was the individual who was staffing when the storefront was robbed who called the police, since she was extremely shaken up and it was not the organization's decision... though we will support her in any way we can."
It's unlikely the store will press charges or pursue any further police action about the robbery."
To which I respond, Hey! Free money!
Posted by: H.D. Miller at October 13, 2005 7:27 PMJames Generic? I guess he thought the reporter wouldn't buy it if he told him his name was "Heywood Jablome". You can't get nuthin' past the boys at the Inquirer!
Posted by: Ed Driscoll at October 13, 2005 8:02 PMWell, at least he didn't give his name as James Africa (a Philly thing, kind of a blast from the past).
Posted by: jim hamlen at October 13, 2005 10:52 PMYup. I remember MOVE, and Wilson Goode's subsequent pyromania vividly.
Posted by: Ed Driscoll at October 13, 2005 10:55 PMDon't forget, it was the PA State Police who actually made and dropped the firebomb, although the Phila. police's lack of courage was the main contributor to the whole event.
Posted by: ratbert at October 14, 2005 10:20 AMThe real irony wouild have been if the robber had popped the pinko t-shirt guy in the head while he lay helpless on the floor, the way Mumia killed Officer Faulkner. Then the shooter could be heard to say, as Mumia did, "I shot the M-F'er, and I hope he dies!"
No one if Philadelphia ever believed Mumia wasn't guilty; many wanted to give him an O.J. (the other O.J.) free pass.
Actually, the MOVE bomb was made by a Philadelphia E.O.D. cop who was also a Marine Corps revervist, a member of my old outfit, although I had never met him. Only the helo was from the staties.
The reason for the fire was that MOVE had staged cisterns of gasoline in their rooftop pillbox, for the very purpose of deterring the police from taking it out. They made sure their small children were not allowed to leave, so that they would be human shields;
Ramiona Africa, the MOVE spokesperson who did real state time for this disaster, shrieked over a loudspeaker before the bomb was dropped, "You can't get us out! We have gasoline and the babies will burn." Big mistake.
