PUBLIC PROBLEMS, PRIVATE SOLUTIONS:

Blair gives green light to new nuclear power plants (FRASER NELSON , 10/09/05, The Scotsman)

TONY BLAIR has decided to back new nuclear power stations, which would be built on the sites of existing plants and presented to the public and his party as a job-creating answer to climate change.

A year-long government inquiry into Britain's future energy requirements is expected by the Prime Minister to conclude that more nuclear energy is the only plausible answer to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The nuclear industry is willing to proceed without any government money....

The American Left (and recalcitrants on the Right) though continues to insist that George W, Bush's pursuance of identical plans is a unique manifestation of conservatism, rather than just a stock Third Way solution.

It will be intersting to see how the British left reacts to the resumption of nuclear power plant construction, since the American left has pretty much gotten to the point that any other power generation source besides solar energy is beyond the pale (well, maybe except cars that run on vegetable oil like Ms. Fonda's, and wind farms, but in Red States only).

The interesting question is why the nuclear power issue became a left wing issue in the US, but not in France.

My hypothesis is that one of the concessions DeGaule received from the Soviets in return for quitting NATO and backing the Arabs, was complete control over domestic policy. In the US and UK the Soviets worked to induce anti-nuclear hysteria among their fellow travelers and useful idiots, in order to hurt the US economically, leave it subject to Arab whims, and cause the loss of nuclear knowledge.

The Soviets are gone, but their useful idiots are still running around like a bunch of energizer bunnies.
