'Chilling' Al Qaeda Memo Obtained (CBS News, Oct. 6, 2005)

The U.S. has obtained a 13-page letter written by Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al Zawahiri, to Abu Musab al Zarqawi in Iraq, outlining with what one senior official calls "chilling clarity" al Qaeda's stretagy for Iraq and beyond, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin. [...]

In the letter, Zawahari complains to Zarqawi that some of his violent tactics are hurting public support for al Qaeda's cause, particularly the videotaped beheadings of hostages.

"We don't need this," the letter says. "Use a bullet instead."

Zawahiri also complains about Zarqawi's all-out war against the Shiites of Iraq, saying the Arab man in the street doesn't understand why suicide bombings are killing so many fellow Muslims.

The letter also indicates Zawahiri's life in hiding has left him cut off from news and financial support. He asks Zarqawi to provide him more information about operations in Iraq, saying he should know at least as much as the enemy knows, and he even asks Zarqawi to send money.

chilling? It sounds like their plan is to lose the WoT because they don't understand America, Islam, or humankind in general.

I guess the focus group surveys are all coming back negative.

Send money?

Guess that means we've mopped up all of Usama's bank accounts, either that or Abu Musab forgot to pay the quarterly franchise fees.

Chilling to the honchos at cBS b/c they just realized they've spent four years doubling down on the losing side in Iraq.

Under the United Nations Convention of Journalese (2001), all statements issued by terrorist groups must be "chilling."

Similarly, all responses by Bush and Blair must be "determined", and should be delivered whilst standing "shoulder to shoulder."

Responses by Democrats/Lib Dems must be "more measured."

Subsequent interventions by Kofi Annan/The Pope/Nelson Mandela/relative of a soldier killed in action, must be in the form of a "passionate plea", unless it's by a woman, in which case it should also be "heartfelt".

Also, it's always a "growing" insurgency (even when it's losing) and you have to work the word "quagmire" in there somewhere.

Chilling alright, if you support Al Qaeda.
I mean all it says is "We're broke, blind, and losing the public opinion war. Your tactics are alienating all of our potential allies.

BTW, did I say we were broke?"

I guess CBS isn't just anti-war, they're on the other side.

Mikey or anyone:

How does one even read that and think we're the ones who should be chilled?

Posted by: oj at October 7, 2005 8:33 AM

Not if you have a basic grasp of English.
And I don't mean typefonts.
