A TALE TOLD BY NRO, SOUND AND FURY SIGNIFYING 12%
65% Say Miers Confirmation Likely (Rasmussen Reports, 10/13/05)
Americans are evenly divided as to whether or not Harriet Miers should be confirmed to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. However, the latest Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 65% believe she is likely to be confirmed. Just 18% say that confirmation is not very likely or not at all likely.Frankly, NRO may be more persuasive than I thought. Posted by David Cohen at October 14, 2005 11:50 AMDespite vocal opposition from many Republican activists, most Republicans across the county support the President's selection. Fifty-four percent (54%) of the GOP faithful say the President's nominee should be confirmed. Only 17% disagree.
Republicans supported the nomination of Chief Justice John Roberts by a 64% to 11% margin.
NRO and other conservative blogs, posting reports of Senators telling the WH they won't vote for Miers and digging up every little thing from the past 20 years, are increasingly confident they will be able to derail the nomination.
Regarding the poll, the conservative pundits are all over the media bashing Miers which may push down these numbers.
Posted by: AWW at October 14, 2005 12:56 PMThe Senators who may or may not be saying things to the anti-Miers pundits against the nominee would have to be hoping for a meltdown at the Judiciary hearing, an not just via some parcing of legaleese on a minor point, but a complete mis-step on a major issue that laymen can understand.
Frum and others, of course, will jump at the first 'i' that's not dotted or 't' that's not crossed during her testimony, but the senators are going to have to have stronger evidence than that if they're going to reject Miers, especially those who were in the Senate 12 years ago and voted to approve the Ginsberg nomination.
Posted by: John at October 14, 2005 1:15 PMWith the exception of Lowry and Lopez, although even Lopez seems to be softening, it seems that the Corner folks are slowly starting to accept that Miers isn't going anywhere. Recent posts by Podhoretz and others seem resigned. They still toss out the occasional fantasy about how she'll crumble when these oh so tough senators grill her on constitutional law in the committee hearings. But reality seems to be taking hold on them.
Posted by: mc at October 14, 2005 2:22 PMFrum is weird. He's the most strident of the anti-Miers useful idiots on NRO. But his first post about her as a possible nominee, on the Fourth of July no less, sounded very enthusiastic.
Lots of bloggers, notably Hugh Hewitt, have ridiculed Frum over that post. His only defense would be that-was-then-this-is-now. So he may just make no defense at all.
Shows how archives can trip you up (wink).
Posted by: Casey Abell at October 14, 2005 2:31 PMHewitt has been having a ball with NRO. He's now posted that Podhoretz is seeking a truce and opened negotiations on the shape of the table.
Really, NRO could do worse than invite Hewitt onto the Corner. When the Cornerites all agree, as they do on Miers, the place gets stuffy and dull. Hugh would liven things up, kick around some of the furniture. Not just about Miers, but about the site's general Bush-bashing lately.
Or maybe they could just invite Orrin. That would really knock over a few chairs. Wait until they heard his digs at Reagan (chuckle, chuckle).

Is there any sane GOP Senator who's going to take the lead in objecting to her? It's really sad to see the screechers pin their hopes and dreams on Spector (who's not sane), Biden, Kennedy and Leahy to get them the nominee they desire.
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at October 14, 2005 3:13 PMI didn't say Harriet Souter, shouldn't be confirmed. I just think, she shouldn't have been nominated.
Posted by: Robert Schwartz at October 14, 2005 4:05 PMRaoul, the Senators are so pathetic that Leahy actually comes off as a statesman when group with th likes of Spector, Biden, Kennedy, Schumer, and Durbin.
Posted by: Jim in Chicago at October 14, 2005 4:05 PMAgree that Hugh and OJ should be allowed to post at NRO just to get some difference of opinion. But I doubt OJ meets their strict elite criteria.
