WORTH FRAMING
Melting Arctic sounds alarm bells (Katherine Harding, Globe and Mail, September 29th, 2005)
Andy Carpenter has only to walk out his front door to see that the Arctic's thick blanket of snow and ice is melting, drip by drip."It's impossible not to notice this," said the mayor of Sachs Harbour, a remote hamlet of 120 on the shore of Banks Island in Canada's Western Arctic. "What worries me is that people are starting to get used to it."

What worries me is that Andy thinks we could or should do something about it.

I'm worried about the new wheat fields that will be cropping up in the Yukon.

Posted by: Raoul Ortega at September 29, 2005 2:32 PMBetter change the name of the Great Slave Lake very soon, not very PC.
Posted by: Dave W. at September 29, 2005 2:54 PMGlobal Warming! Get behind IT!
Posted by: Bruno at September 29, 2005 8:35 PMArctic ice was rapidly melting about 30 years ago. Apparently it froze again and now is melting again. Sounds like a cycle to me.
(The only reason I know about the melting 30 years ago is, I was a student at Ohio State then. The Institute for Polar Studies is located at OSU, and they would post the latest polar news on a bulletin board, which I would occasionally peruse. Otherwise, it seems to have gone down the memory hole.)
I believe the proper pronunciation is "Slay-vee", two syllables. The name of the major tribe(s) in the area..
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at September 29, 2005 9:22 PMAgain Raoul, I am humbled and enlightened by your knowledge. Thanks (seriously).
Posted by: Dave W. at September 29, 2005 10:38 PMI believe the proper pronunciation is "Slay-vee",
Hmm, would it be intellectually niggardly of me to point out that this will hardly matter to those destined to do the whining about it?
