Hamas Halts Its Attacks on Israel From Gaza Strip (Laura King, September 26, 2005, LA Times)
In an abrupt reversal after a two-day Israeli campaign of arrests and assassinations, the Palestinian militant group Hamas announced Sunday it would no longer use the Gaza Strip as a staging ground for attacks against Israel. The declaration, delivered at a late-night news conference in Gaza City by Hamas' top political leader, Mahmoud Zahar, came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon promised a no-holds-barred crackdown on Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other militant organizations.
"The movement is announcing a halt to all its military operations from the Gaza Strip against the Israeli occupation," Zahar told reporters. He said Hamas was acting to protect the interests of the Palestinian people.
Democratic accountability is a marvelous thing to behold. Posted by Orrin Judd at September 26, 2005 8:24 AM
Though perhaps not nearly as marvelous as having unbridled faith in pathological liars with a distinctively destructive agenda.
(Or constructive, perhaps, depending on one's point of view.)

Why not have poll to name the date Israel re-retakes Gaza?

Posted by: Barry Meislin at September 26, 2005 9:44 AMFear can be a wonderful thing. Hamas (and the rest of the terror groups) are NOW at their crossroads - they can drop terror for good or they can be destroyed. It is really that simple. This time, Abbas is not even invited to the show.
"Israeli occupation" - I heard that last night on the BBC and laughed out loud. But the best part was that the guy sounded like the F-16s were flying overhead as he spoke - he was practically trembling.
Posted by: jim hamlen at September 26, 2005 10:26 AMJim. How can they drop terror? What would they substitute for it?
For countless generations they have bred brutish thugs who blindly follow orders to kill with martyrdom their only reward. They have no other function. Does anyone think these people will now turn to animal husbandry and hydroponic gardening.
You may be right that the leadership wants Israel to take out as many of them as they can to reduce the number of mindless killers in their midst. I hope Israel declines to take the bait.
But Mohammed is not His prophet.
