How to pick a good watermelon (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, September 2, 2005)
[L]ook for the "ground spot" -- the underside of the melon that lay in contact with the soil, out of the sun. A deep cream or yellow color -- as opposed to white -- is what you're looking for.Posted by Orrin Judd at September 2, 2005 12:00 AMStripes showing through the ground spot may be a sign of immaturity. Then lift the melon if you can; its heft should surprise you. Get a look at its shape. Full and rounded at the ends are propitious signs. Bypass the pointy-ended specimens. Finally, if any stem is left attached, it should be dry and brown.
Is there a hidden message here? Selecting a watermelon seems far afield of the weighty matters usually posted.

Yes there is a hidden message. Note that oj did not put his usual headline in this entry.

That's how men chose women. His lack of a headline, simply means he didn't want to get punched in the nose from the wife.

Food is good, especially watermelon, especially on Labor Day Weekend.

Posted by: AWW at September 2, 2005 10:12 AMAllen, are you sure this post isn't a comment on the New Orleans scene? Yellow bottomed, green on the outside, red on the inside and full of black pips? Devilishly clever that oj.

Hold one up to your ear and tap it gently the side. This works for watermelons too.
