JUST DROPPED BY ON MY WAY TO SAVE IRAQ

Penn bungles real action-hero role (The Australian, September 6th, 2005)

An emotional Celine Dion rounded on US authorities over their slow rescue effort in hurricane-crippled New Orleans, while actor Sean Penn's personal crusade to save victims took on water.

Movie star and political activist Penn, 45, was in the collapsing city to aid stranded victims, but his boat sprang a leak after he apparently forgot to put the bung in the drainage hole in the vessel's bottom.

The outspoken actor had planned to rescue children but his dinghy began taking on water within seconds of its launch. When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve, Penn replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

Didn't anyone tell the the idiot that disaster relief is entirely a federal responsibility?

Note also that he was wearing a bulletproof vest, rather than a life-preserver. He's lucky not to have drowned.

This was even better than the pizza scene with Ray Walston...

Uhhh, Celine?

Remember the ice storm?

I do.

She's got a big home, she can open it.

The photo of the street he was going down showed a car up to the bottom of its bumper in water. The water was about knee deep there.

Definitely not ready for the U.S.L.S.S. is he?

I'm going to take this opportunity to rip The Scientology Crappola Association. Tom Cruis, Travolta, name others. They have a ocean liner, across the bay. Where are they? I'll tell you this: they won't bring on board poor people, because they have no money to afford the fees of $cientology membership.

Every tragedy needs comic relief - Penn plays the fools part well. I like how he brought along a photo crew on his "rescue mission".

Operation Penn is a near perfect duplicate of the State and Local response to the disaster writ small. A crew of numbnuts paddling a sinking boat while hamming it up for the cameras. Ya gotta love it.

Ya can't tell an idiot nuttin'!

Launching without the drain plug is actually a faily common small-boat flatliner screw-up. Somebody did it at the ramp I was using this past weekend. It's always a hoot.

In this instance it is just one more indication of what we all knew, namely that this exibition was vacuous posturing. The clown should have just sent money and kept out of the way.

Hey, give them a chance, AllenS. I'll tell you where Tom Cruise and John Travolta are.

They've just nipped off to pick up Bono, Tim Robbins and a camera crew, and then they're going to helicopter into New Orleans armed with buckets to bail the city out.

Meanwhile Susan Sarandon is on her way from successfully making poverty history in Africa, carrying the world's biggest piece of blotting paper, with which to soak up whatever little water remains after their Herculean celebrity efforts.

He was on a punt. A punt!

No zodiac, no party pontoon boat, no jet ski, and no private helicopter. A punt. Perfect for the little runt. And I'm stopping right there.

Ratbert:

There's a Gilbert and sullivan lyric in there, just waiting to be written . . .

He is a silly runt (A runt!)
Who rowed out in a punt (A punt!)
With cameras there, the Press so fair
To put his image on the air
A plug, not in, that was his sin,
A sunken boat he could not spin
Embarassment! (Embarassment!)
His impetus so meanly spent
Has brought him to a dreadful state
Alas! the runt has sunk his punt
In full view of the Fourth estate!
(Alas! the runt has sunk his punt
In full view of the Fourth estate!)

Mike:

9/10 for the lyric, and the extra mark for avoiding the obvious.

Mike:

Wonderful! Don't mind Brit, he has a dirty mind, but we're working on him.
