IN HELL THE COOKS ARE BRITISH

EXCLUSIVE: UP IN FLAMES: Tons of British aid donated to help Hurricane Katrina victims to be BURNED by Americans (Ryan Parry, Mirror, 9/19/05)

HUNDREDS of tons of British food aid shipped to America for starving Hurricane Katrina survivors is to be burned.

US red tape is stopping it from reaching hungry evacuees.

Instead tons of the badly needed Nato ration packs, the same as those eaten by British troops in Iraq, has been condemned as unfit for human consumption.

The government is a blunt instrument.

Probably contained haggis - yuccch!

They made the decicision when someone looked at the "use by" expiration dates, and realized the third digit wasn't a "9", but a "6".

And I wonder if REI would sell dehydrated haggis, and could you tell it wasn't the Turkey Tetrazinni?

And I wonder if REI would sell dehydrated haggis...

Let's hope not! But as further proof that truth is stranger than fiction, my friend who visited Scotland this summer (and incidentally was in London the morning of 7/7) swears it's the honest-to-gosh truth that they now have....
....
....
vegetarian haggis!

One can always spot the whippershappers when they gripe about MRE's, the worst of which are far, far more appetizing than C Rations.

In hell, all the cooks may be British; but all the pastry chefs are Chinese :P

Greater love hath no man than this, that he is willing to eat the last Meatballs with Barbecue Sauce so that his friends may have permission to open a new case of MREs. They tell me all the new recipes are really good though.

Bloody ingrates.

Kirk:

Your friend is quite right.

All haggis are strictly vegetarian: they eat the thistles and mosses that grow in the rolling hillsides of Glen Coe.

Granted, C-rations were pretty rude. I, however liked every meal. Then along came LRRP rations, which were the precursor to MRE's. They didn't weigh much and all you had to do was add water and stir. If you had a heat tablet, you were really in business. My first LRRP meal was hamburger and rice, and after 3 months of C's, I still fondly remember my delight in that meal.

Oh, please, my dad was eating WWII expired "food" 56-58 in Germany.

A few years ago one of my friends spoke so bitterly about "Ham Slice" that to this day I can't hear the words without grinning.

U.S. Military food never expires. 56-58 food that was served in Germany most likely came from the kitchen, and served in the field. Perhaps the noon meal came from K-rations. I served 66-67 in the States. When we went to the field, most of the time our meals came from our traveling kitchen. The kitchen had to also practice deployment. 56-58 was Elvis time. When you're given a case (12 meals, 24 pounds) of C-rations, every 4 days, for months on end, then you know things are serious. I haven't ate any Limey food, but I'll bet it sucks.
