Unfortunately, my guess is that those oh-so-deserving heads will remain unexploded.

Mr. Met refused to testify before HUAC, so I don't really think he's electable. Plus, I heard he's gay
Governor:
Is Mitch Lemus a pen name of Rick Perlstein's?
Posted by: Rick T. at September 30, 2005 12:37 PMWho's the pretty black woman?
Posted by: Bob at September 30, 2005 12:57 PMCon-dee! Con-dee! Con-dee! Con-dee! . . .
Posted by: Mike Morley at September 30, 2005 1:03 PMOK!

Posted by: ratbert at September 30, 2005 1:13 PMI know there were a lot of big-time Brooklyn liberal back in the 60s who were big backers or Mr. Met, after their beloved Dodgers fled to L.A. Mr. Met's original patrons, the Paysons and Whitneys, were old-time Rockefeller Republicans, and of couse, John Lindsey never would have gotten re-elected in 1969 if he hadn't spent a month-and-a-half hanging around with Mr. Met trying to convince people he was part of the team's brain-trust (Lindsey, not Mr. Met, though he certainly has a large cranium). Mr. Met never made an effort to distance himself from Mr. Lindsey, which in my mind was a de facto endorsement of his already-failed policies.
Of course, all this is 35-40 years old, so his views may have changed, and at least Mr. Met wasn't nutty enough to support the Mailer-Breslin ticket in '69. But I still think we need to find out from Mr. Met where exactly he stands on today's issues before we annoint him vice-presidential material.
Posted by: John at September 30, 2005 1:14 PMI wonder if Condi would settle for the VP slot. The contest might go all the way to the convention floor - very exciting.
Posted by: pj at September 30, 2005 2:10 PMJeez Mr. Met? Just goes to show you what a bush league franchise the Mets are.
Real baseball teams don't have, or need, mascots.
(Anyone remember the words to "Meet the Mets"? Do they still use that song?)
Posted by: Jim in Chicago at September 30, 2005 2:14 PMI was just referencing that song in an e-mail to OJ a couple of days ago as a matter of fact:
MEET THE METS,
MEET THE METS,
Step right up and greet the Mets!
Bring your kiddies,
bring your wife;
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
because the Mets are really sockin’ the ball; knocking those home runs over the wall!
East side,
West side,
everybody’d coming down
to meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town!
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they’re hollerin’ and cheerin’ and they’re jumpin’ in their seats,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are tru to the orange and blue,
so hurry up and come on down -
‘cause we’ve got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!
Give ‘em a yell!
Give ‘em a hand!
And let ‘em know your rootin’ in the stand!
Jim in Chicago: I'm not a Mets fan but the Mets were created in 1962 and have two World Championships since then. How many do Chicago fans have in the same time period? Ok, I'll be generous, how many since President Harding took office?
Posted by: Bob at September 30, 2005 2:36 PMoops, "teams", not "fans"
Posted by: Bob at September 30, 2005 2:37 PMBut the White Sox have not just the 1919 World Series but Disco Demolition Night, too. Both set the standard for on or off field antics for any other team.
Go White Sox!
(and go Cleveland. I'll even forgive a sweep if it that's what it takes to keep out one of the two most annoying teams in the AL.)
Bob:
I grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn . . .
a Yankee fan, and remain one til this day.
Tho I wouldn't mind seeing the palehose make a run at the Series this year, just not at the expense of the Yanks.
Posted by: Jim in Chicago at September 30, 2005 3:24 PMPJ: Veep would be a step down for her. Besides, Cheney could pantomime a heart attack anytime and the job would be hers sans primary.
Posted by: Mike Beversluis at September 30, 2005 3:31 PMJim: Oh, so that explains it. My condolences. GO TRIBE!
Posted by: Bob at September 30, 2005 4:04 PMRaoul, I thought you were West Coast. Why Go Sox?
