UNION OF SELF-SERVING RUSSIANS (via Robert Schwartz):
More Abortions Than Births in Russia — Health Official (MosNews, 8/23/05)
Russians, whose lives are shorter and poorer than they were under communism, have more abortions than births to avoid the costs of raising children, Bloomberg.com reported Tuesday quoting the country’s highest-ranking obstetrician.About 1.6 million women had an abortion last year, a fifth of them under the age of 18, and about 1.5 million gave birth, said Vladimir Kulakov, vice president of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. “Many more” abortions weren’t reported.
One has to be deeply deluded to believe it natural to propigate the species. Posted by Orrin Judd at August 26, 2005 2:52 PM
"whose lives are shorter and poorer than under commuism" - Of course things were much better under communism - just like those that laud Cuba's health care system.

They are definitely dying younger.
Whether that has anything to do with the end of Communism isn't known.
They're mostly drinking themselves to death.
TB and AIDS are also big problems.
Does destroying thousands of years of custom and tradition along with the organic institutions which protected those customs and traditions have anything to do with the mass depression and melancholia imbedded in the culture which would seem necessary to generate such a level of abortion and suicide that is seen in the former USSR? How long should it take to recover from the experiment with Bolshevism, Stalinism and the scientism of dialectical materialism?

Finns. They're depressed, too.

Posted by: jdkelly at August 26, 2005 5:32 PMHow do you know if you are speaking with an extroverted Finn?
He's staring at YOUR shoes.
Thank you. Thank you. Please. Thank you.
Posted by: at August 26, 2005 7:19 PMIf Russians having more abortions than births, they're definitely dying younger. They're being killed by their moms.
Posted by: kynna at August 26, 2005 8:17 PMNo different than the numbers out of Washington, D.C.
Posted by: obc at August 27, 2005 12:01 PMNoticeably absent from the European Reuters or MosNews stories is the word adoption despite 7% of Russian couples who are unable to have children.
Also, it makes clear that convenience is the sole rationale for the abortions - not incest, rape, or health concerns as the American media will have you believe.
I have a piece on this on my site too. Glad to see someone else is paying attention to this. I doubt mainstream media will...
