OVER OVER THERE:
Islamic Jihad head: We may recognize the State of Israel (Gideon Levy, 8/03/05, Haaretz)
An Islamic Jihad leader in the West Bank, Abdel Halim Izzedine, known as Abu Qassam, has told Haaretz that his organization supports the hudna - temporary cease-fire - but is forced to respond to Israeli provocations. [...]"If Islamic Jihad participates in the Palestinian Authority, and the PA reaches a settlement with Israel, this will be recognition on our part. Not official recognition, but recognition," he said. [...]
[J]ust as Zionist ideology is beginning to give up parts of the Land of Israel, so his organization would be willing to give up parts of its ideology calling for an Islamic state from the river to the sea.
Forcing statehood on them could hardly have worked better. Posted by Orrin Judd at August 4, 2005 7:54 AM
I note, however, that he calls this decision an acceptance of a "hudna" or cease-fire. There is no indication of permanent peace with Israel. This seems more likely to be a tactical decision to accept a 10 or even 20 year truce and then attack Israel again.
Posted by: L. Rogers at August 4, 2005 9:49 AMDemographics takes care of the problem in twenty years.
Posted by: oj at August 4, 2005 9:53 AMUnconditional surrender takes care of it in probably seven days.
Posted by: ratbert at August 4, 2005 10:27 AMBut they already recognize that the Zionist Entity is irredeemably illegal and must be destroyed by any means possible.
Posted by: Barry Meislin at August 4, 2005 10:53 AMIf anything 'gets rid of the problem in 10 to 20 years' OJ, it will be internecine warfare among Jews.
Once the territories are removed, along with some border changes in Galilee, the remainder will be less than 10% Muslim, and for the most part they'll either be Bedouins, or absorbed into the Christian and Jewish communities.
bart:
Peace will make Israel an even more open society and hasten its transition to being an Arab nation.
Posted by: oj at August 4, 2005 2:21 PMWith comments like that from OJ, I often wonder how much booze he already has drank today. I would put OJ's comment and the second coming in the same time frame for when they will happen.
Posted by: BJW at August 4, 2005 2:55 PMbart's bedouin women have 8 to 9 children apiece.
Posted by: oj at August 4, 2005 3:10 PMWell then, the Israeli men need to start marrying them.
Posted by: ratbert at August 4, 2005 3:19 PMThe children wouldn't be Jewish.
Posted by: OJ at August 4, 2005 3:26 PMAs do Hasidic women, OJ, and there are lots more Hasidim in Israel than Bedouins.
Any peace will be a cold peace, and Israel will remain essentially a 'garrison state' until you and I are long mouldering in the grave.
Posted by: bart at August 4, 2005 3:41 PMThe immigration phase of Zionism is over, not of Arabs to Israel.
Posted by: OJ at August 4, 2005 6:48 PMisrael has already started replacing palestinian workers with thais, philipinos, etc.
all they need to do is make citizenship contingent on being jewish and poof! no more demographic problem.
Posted by: cjm at August 4, 2005 7:04 PMcjm,
If you have one Jewish grandparent, you're eligible for citizenship.
Posted by: bart at August 4, 2005 8:38 PMBart: I beg you. Please don't start that hare again. (Also, that's not exactly correct.)
Posted by: David Cohen at August 4, 2005 8:44 PMone drop of blood?
Posted by: oj at August 4, 2005 8:48 PMNo drops at all. Israeli citizenship is not limited to Jews.
Posted by: David Cohen at August 5, 2005 1:15 AMIf anyone is interested, we've generated a lot of heat and no light at all on this topic in the past.
