Supreme Court nominee John Roberts received a "well qualified" rating from the American Bar Association on Wednesday, clearing another hurdle in his path to the nation's highest court.The rating - by unanimous vote of an ABA committee - was revealed as the Senate Judiciary Committee announced its plans for Roberts' Sept. 6 confirmation hearings.
There goes their last hope of attacking him on an issue that doesn't only appeal to their own Left.

They almost need to fold so they can claim that they went along with Bush's reasonable nomination of Roberts when they later oppose whoever comes next.

Here is a candidate that is without question academically and professionally qualified for the position. His writings show a conservative bent, but more in a sober, reflective way than an ideological way. Frankly, it would be hard to find someone, purely on qualifications alone, who is better.
That makes any opposition that tries to claim that he is unqualified look as disingenuous as it actually would be, and destroys the oposition's credibility so that the next candidate can be defended by claiming the opposition is "Crying Wolf" again.
The opposition to President Bush picked the wrong battle. Again. How lucky he is to have the enemies he has.

I'm not so sure about that. Given the state of things and the history of the 20th century, I think it might well be inevitable that someone like Bush would be faced with the incoherent, incompetent political enemies he has. If they were truly smart and clever, would they believe what they do?
Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at August 18, 2005 3:50 PMAOG: I think you and I are in agreement. President Bush's enemies have flipped to the point they reflexively attack - even in a situation only a loon would attack in. It is an example of "Please Brer Fox, don' throw me in that briar-patch!"
Having your enemies loath you to the point of insanity can be useful - and darn lucky!

Although it is quite likely that the insanity would occur whether it was George Bush or any other Republican in the White House. Having control of the Federal Gov't for all these years and then inexorably losing it could very likely have fueled insanity on the left no matter who was there. President Bush is just the fortunate recipient of their insane vitriol (and there also seems to be something about him personally that pushes their buttons - and I suspect he does it on purpose.)
