DON'T BE THE LAST ONE ON YOUR BLOCK TO ACCEPT THE INEVITABLE:
Time to hedge bets on McCain bid in '08 (Robert Robb, Aug. 28, 2005, Arizona Republic)
Everyone I know who knows John McCain better than I do thinks he will run for president in 2008.Until now, my bet has been that, in the final analysis, McCain would decide against it. But McCain's appearance and performance at an East Valley Republican town hall last Thursday has caused me to want to hedge that bet.
The limb gets lonelier. Posted by Orrin Judd at August 28, 2005 7:28 PM
Mr. Cohen, are you or are you not a candidate?
Posted by: Matt Murphy at August 28, 2005 7:31 PMHe's not running. This article, about a meet and greet in Arizona in which McCain acted as if he has nothing to lose (read, nothing to gain) and didn't go out of his way to woo the audience, does nothing to change that.
Posted by: David Cohen at August 28, 2005 8:41 PMOJ's prediction of McCain getting the GOP nomination in '08 will suffer the same fate as his Cheney will resign theory.
Posted by: AWW at August 28, 2005 8:44 PMI doubt if he will - he is like Howard Dean in some ways. Great ideas but inability to connect with everyone.
Posted by: skumora at August 28, 2005 9:21 PMMcCain will have an even easier time if he's running as the incumbent vp.
Posted by: oj at August 28, 2005 10:40 PMI don't think he can beat a real conservative in the primarys

He's in the favorite role that W had last time but he actually wins NH--who has enough left to stop him in SC?
Posted by: oj at August 28, 2005 11:42 PMI hate to say this, David, but you've made a prediction so foolish as to lend Orrin's powers a bit of credibility. Bad form.
Posted by: joe shropshire at August 29, 2005 1:43 AMWe won't know for two years if McCain is actually running.
All we can say with certainty, now, is that McCain is willing to entertain thoughts of running.

McCain is probably the most liberal-friendly Republican that has a chance at the presidency; can anyone think of anyone else?
Posted by: JohnnyFive at August 29, 2005 10:21 AMRudy, Dick Lugar, George Pataki, Colin Powell, Chuck Hagel...
Posted by: oj at August 29, 2005 10:36 AMJoe: There's no point in making easy predictions.
Posted by: David Cohen at August 29, 2005 10:48 AMOJ - I think Colin Powell will have enough dirt on him from his bunglings with the Bush administration that he won't stand much a chance against a democrat who can actually criticize his opponent. You might be right about Rudy and Pataki, and maybe Hagel if he starts getting more exposure, and doesn't piss off the Republicans too much. I am a liberal who would vote for Hagel or McCain before I vote for a Democrat.
Posted by: JohnnyFive at August 29, 2005 10:54 AMJohnny:
No one in America can criticize Colin Powell, least of all a white Democrat who requires black votes to have a prayer.
Posted by: oj at August 29, 2005 11:00 AMOJ - I disagree. Even if the Dem is a white male (because it might be a female, or other minority...), I think don't think it would make that much of a difference. Just my opinion. A lot of people don't even know that Colin Powell is black.
And after lying to the American public (along with Condi, Cheney, and Bush) there are few things Powell can be criticized on; WMD's in particular.
Johnny:
All you do is give him a chance to denounce the faulty intelligence, say he was tricked too, and swear to never go to war again unless we're attacked.
Posted by: oj at August 29, 2005 11:34 AMWhich would be his policy anyway. There's a reason they call it the Powell Doctrine.
Posted by: joe shropshire at August 29, 2005 12:00 PMjoe:
Yes, never give your opponent a chance to make his case and seem a hero in doing so.
Posted by: oj at August 29, 2005 12:06 PMOJ; How do you define "chance"? Hagel, Pataki and Lugar have the proverbial snowballs chance to get a GOP nomination.
Posted by: Bob at August 29, 2005 2:01 PMBob:
If you're running you have a chance. If you're not you don't.

That's exactly what put Clinton I into the White House - simply being in the race, where he was able to benefit from so many lucky breaks that one might believe that God wanted him to win.
