AUGUST IS FOR WISHFUL THINKING:
Bush's summer of discontent (E.J. Dionne, 8/09/05, Washington Post)
President Bush has survived summers of discontent before. But this season's doldrums — reflected in dismal poll numbers and a surprisingly weak Republican showing in a special Ohio congressional election — will be harder to surmount.
Boy, was I ever wrong when I said Charlie Brown might figure out Lucy was going to yank the ball away again. Instead this looks to be the fifth consecutive August that Democrats and the MSM declare the end of the Bush presidency. Posted by Orrin Judd at August 9, 2005 10:52 PM
And some people keep buying season tickets to the Los Angeles Clippers year after year after year...
Posted by: John at August 9, 2005 10:56 PMIt's starting to look like Bush won't get re-elected.
Posted by: carter at August 9, 2005 10:57 PME.J. probably has season tickets for the Wizards.
They can declare all they want, but there will be SS 'reform' by spring, and most likely a tax bill by next summer. Not to mention another Justice (besides Roberts).
And defending Paul Hackett? E.J. should know better. I heard him on Ed Schultz on Monday (for about 90 seconds) and he was awful. It was like listening to a junior high school cheerleader.
Posted by: jim hamlen at August 9, 2005 11:03 PMIt really has taken them a while to crank it up this time. Usually they have it going in June.
I've noticed it in their economic reporting, though. They've taken glee in reporting "great numbers, BUT...." and then devoting 2/3 of a column to talking about how bad the economy is.
Of course, nobody's paying attention right now, and the economy will still be booming a month from now. Plenty of time to take credit, and use the media doom and gloom as an excuse to push more tax cuts. It's so good to be the misunderestimated majority right now! :)
Posted by: kevin whited at August 10, 2005 12:12 AMCould we choose another word instead of "booming?"
There's lots of things and people going boom right now.
It's really been too quiet here, I'm getting a little cautious.

Posted by: Matt Murphy at August 10, 2005 12:28 AMOnly three more miserable summers to go. I hope E.J. can make it.
Posted by: AllenS at August 10, 2005 5:13 AMAugust 2008 will be filled with stories about how the new Republican nominee lacks the President's common touch and compassion.

Like how when Reagan passed away a bunch of liberal columnists asked why can't our current administration be more like the Gipper's? Sheesh...
