THOUGH WE'LL MAKE AN EXCEPTION FOR MAD DOG 20-20 (via Glenn Dryfoos):

Americans tap wine over beer (Jennifer Harper, July 19, 2005, THE WASHINGTON TIMES)

A Gallup poll released yesterday found that wine has surpassed beer and spirits as the stated drink of choice among those who imbibe.

Oh, it's not by much: 39 percent of the respondents said they drank wine most often; 36 percent drank beer. Statistically, this is a mighty close race between the dueling beverages, as the poll has a margin of error of four percentage points. [...]

Gallup also has found a "gender gap" in drinking. More than half of the male respondents -- 52 percent -- prefer beer, while only 23 percent of women preferred it.

Making wine drinkers, by definition, sissies.

I've been meaning to apologize for bringing wine to your house, but now I realize that would make me look like a sissy, so I'll skip it. Nice lasagna though.

It all depends on the circumstances. You wouldn't drink beer with pate'. You wouldn't have wine with kielbasa and kraut.

With beer, "pate" is called "liverwurst". And "caviar" is called "bait".

And along with "Maddog", don't forget to include Thunderbird. Yum.

I think OJ furtively subscribes to the "Wine Spectator" and religiously buys at least one case of their top ten recommendations for his wine cellar.

As you grow older and start to worry more about the approaching innevatibility of aortic dissection, the health benefits of Red Wine (Aussie Shiraz and California Zin) become attractive. Also Port, is wonderful for those long winter nights.

It was until the restrictions on advertising hard liquor, starting with anti-billboard campaigns in the late 70s if memory serves.

cider nation, in the beginning.

i think they just made 'em quit advertising the hard stuff on tv, joe. where i live, there are TONs of hard liquor billboards.

Posted by: lonbud at July 26, 2005 1:17 AM

It's legal to advertise hard liquor on television.

It's just not much done.

Crown Royale had some ads on last year.

I regularly see ads for Bombay Sapphire gin on TV, and pass a billboard for Canadian Velvet whiskey. I don't think either form is illegal. IIRC there was a gentleman's agreement for no hard-liqour ads on TV that went by the wayside a few years ago.
