WHAT THE DEMOCRATS CAN DO FOR YOU:

Sanders Steps Up: The representative for the rest of us sets his sights on the Senate (Joel Bleifuss, May 24, 2005, In These Times)

If elected, or should I say when elected, what kind of leadership will you bring to the U.S. Senate?

If I'm elected to the U.S. Senate, I think it would be fair to say that I'll be the most progressive voice in the Senate and that I will continue to do the work that I did in the House. There are many huge issues out there, but my major emphasis will be on economic issues and addressing what I consider to be the collapse of the middle class: the fact that despite the huge increases in productivity and technology, the average American worker is worse off today than he or she was 30 years ago.

It could practically be the new slogan of the Democratic Party--"We'll make it 1975 again."

How does his claim deal with this:

"The number of U.S. households with a net worth of $1 million or more rose 21% in 2004, according to a survey released yesterday by Spectrem Group, a wealth-research firm in Chicago. It is the largest increase since 1998, according to the study, which was based on data from more than 450 qualified respondents. There now are 7.5 million millionaire households in the U.S., breaking the record set in 1999 of 7.1 million. The study excluded the value of primary residences, but included second homes and other real estate."

Even relatively modest amounts faithfully deposited in a 401k over a 20-30 year period will put a middle-class family near or over the 1 million mark.

1975 was an awful year in an awful decade. I think '75 was the year my Dad sold our VW Bug to a group of black militants. They later used it as the getaway car in a bank robbery.

Can't Sanders be transferred to France ? He would sound like a voice of reason there.

Wasn't 1975 controlled by republicans? Lets say, 1980, that was a pretty crappy dem controled year.

Bleh.
