Islam, Christianity more alike than different, imam says (Scott Finn, 5/23/05, WV Gazette)

Muslims, Christians and Jews are cousins whose faiths share much in common, according to Imam Mohammad Jamal Daoudi of the Islamic Center of West Virginia.

Daoudi gave the final talk Sunday at the West Virginia Humanities Council 2005 Little Lecture series.

He emphasized the similarities among the three faiths. All are monotheistic and all spring from Abraham, for example.

In Islam, Moses and Jesus are seen as great prophets, on the same level as the final prophet, Mohammed, he said.

“We are cousins and brethren, long separated from each other,” he said. “We have left each other, and we have been looking for one another for a long time.”

In the long term the enemies are no within the monotheist camp.

Peter Kreeft's "Ecumenical Jihad" made a similar point.

Not with Islam as it is currently conceived. Islam was created as the religion of an armed camp bent on world conquest. Jihad, dar-al-islam, dar-al-harb, umma, kalipha and other related political concepts are living time bombs out of that era. Until such time as Muslims learn to re-read their texts and their history so that they can live with other faiths in peace and harmony, they are going to be the leading threat to world peace. But I am not holding my breath.

There is a big difference. Christianity (and to some extent Judaism) is informed by Classical Greek rationality. The God of the New Testament is effectively constrained by the True and the Good. What would a true Christian do if a vision of God, or similar, instructed him to do something evil? He wouldn't do it, explaining that it is an unbiblical vision from Satan.

Allah is not so constrained. If a true muslim were to receive a vision telling him to murder or steal he would do it. Examples are in the Koran.

In summary Islam needs a New Testament before it can be compared to Christanity.

Well, first of all Christianity isn't monotheistic.

Many of its adherents believe in 3 gods and Catholics in 4.

Second of all, Allah is not the same god as Jehovah. Obviously. Allah did not have a son, for example.

It's just amazing the kind of twisted nonsense that religious believers can persuade themselves they have to say.

Harry it's all I can do to try to make sense out of the twisted nonsense that your serve up on these comments.

You contend Allah and Jehovah are the same?

I bet you wouldn't try that in Riyadh.

Posted by: Harry Eagar at May 27, 2005 4:35 PM

Of course they're the same--Muslims say so.
