"RISE UP" THEOLOGY:
Cardinal Mahoney Channels Joe Hill in Honor of Miguel Contreras (Torie Osborn, Huffington Post, 5/13/2005)
[The funeral sermon featured] Cardinal Mahoney's eloquent use of scripture to call for the meek, the poor, particularly new immigrants to "rise up" -- "let the meek not remain meek, but rise up to improve their lives."
I believe the scripture in question appeared during the following syllogism:
PREMISE: Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)
PREMISE: Let the meek not remain meek. (Cardinal Mahony)
CONCLUSION: Let the meek not remain blessed, neither let them inherit the earth.
The sermon's stirring finish: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: But lay up for yourselves life improvements. For where your treasure is, there will your improved cardiac health be also."

A clever editorial.

The guy wasn't even 50 years old when he became AB.
Unless his Cardinal Law-esque shuffling of clerical child-abusers from parish to parish finally catches up with him, this SOB will end up serving more than 25 years in LA.
There's still another 5 years to go before he can be put out to pasture.
