Australia rules out hostage talks (BBC, 5/02/05)

Australia says it is preparing to send an emergency team of officials and police to Iraq to seek the release of a kidnapped Australian contractor.

But Australian Prime Minister John Howard ruled out any negotiations with the man's captors.

I think negotiations are fine. It's an excellent example of the aphorism "diplomacy is the art of saying 'nice doggie' while looking for a rock". And who knows? They might just surrender. It's paying the danegeld that's the problem.
