HERE'S YOUR FORTY ACRES, FORGET ABOUT THE DONKEYS:

'Party of Lincoln' wants blacks back (Joyce King, 5/12/05, USA Today)

Last month, I was invited to a church service to hear a man that Time magazine once dubbed "the next Billy Graham." Bishop T.D. Jakes, the internationally known minister of The Potter's House, a non-denominational church in Dallas, extended a welcome to all first-time visitors. But there were three people in the audience he acknowledged by name.

One was the new Dallas Mavericks basketball coach, Avery Johnson. The second was me. I wrote a book about a hate crime in Jasper, Texas. Even more stunning was the third guest. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, was greeted enthusiastically by the largely African-American crowd. [...]

Democrats preach about the "40 acres and a mule" that blacks never got. But more and more, Republicans are pushing an economic agenda that claims to correct that. The last time I was in a Dallas church service with a powerful Texas Republican, he later moved from the governor's mansion to the White House.

Kay Bailey Hutchison last week met in Washington with some 500 African Americans from around the country in a two-day event billed as an "African American Summit."

She did the same last year, as well, at around the same time.

WASHINGTON (NNPA) - Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Elijah Cummings said at the National Press Club that African American voters would play a major role in the November election.

Cummings made his comments in a speech last week at the National Press Club.

"Bill Clinton won the 1996 presidential race with 84 percent of the Black vote.
Four years later, Al Gore received an even larger percentage of African American votes and won the popular vote for president by 500,000 votes If the demographic trends and voting patterns remain the same as in the 2000 election - the presumptive Democratic nominee will win by at least 3 million votes."[emph. add.]

3 million black votes that the GOP managed to peel off.
