DOWN ON DEAN (Robert Novak, 5/28/05, Townhall)

Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean recently came to New York to dine with prominent party members and reassure them about his performance, but he totally failed with former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin.

Rubin, an icon in Democratic circles, left the meeting appalled by Dean. In contrast, party insider Vernon Jordan was impressed by the national chairman. That left Rubin wondering aloud whether he and Jordan had been at the same event.

Same events, different Party. There's no room for a Rubin anymore.

Appalled? Where has Rubin been? Dr Dean is the modern Democratic Party without the guile. Dean simply embodies the rhetoric of the last 50 years or so. Where did Mr Rubin think the radical egalitarian class warfare stuff was heading if not directly to Howie? Is he appalled by any of the other screwballs in his party or just the methods employed by this particular nutjob?

Rubin just told Democratic leaders this week they should continue to offer no competing plan to Bush's proposals for Social Security reform, and this is coming from a former U.S. Treasury Secretary and a top official now with the biggest bank in the nation.

Rubin may be appalled by Dean's style, but he certainly has no better substance to offer voters based on that recent statement.

Dean is going to lead the youth movement in the Democrat Party. He will do that by driving all of the adults away.

the Dean Youth -- has a nice ring to it

But will he offer them personal accounts? On second thought the Dean youths don't really care about accumulating "wealth." They already have Mommy's and grandaddy's and Georges to work with.

"The %$@#&* bond traders" - they'll get you every time (especially the Democrats).
