DIDN'T ANYBODY READ THE MEMO?:

Karzai to ask Bush for security deal (ROBERT BURNS, April 13, 2005, AP)

Catching U.S. officials slightly off guard, Afghan President Hamid Karzai is seeking a long-term security partnership that could keep U.S. troops there indefinitely and make permanent the military relationship that began when American forces invaded his country in 2001.

How can it have caught us off-guard when the Left has assured us our nefarious purpose all along has been to establish permanent bases?

And don't forget that oil pipeline that will be built across Afghanistan to deliver crude to Los Angeles.

I hope this isn't a large presence. Afghanistan matters because it is a kind of no-man's land between larger states, a place where terrorists could set up shop if allowed to, a kind of Hole-in-the-Wall. It has no economic worth whatsoever. Thus, our interest there is small but enduring.

bart;

One presumes that's precisely why Karzai would like us to stay.

OJ;

Clearly Karzai is just a CIA plant, dancing to the mental commands beamed at him from the neo-cons' orbital mind control lasers. Burns is just spinning on behalf of Cheney via the Halliburton cabal.

Burns is just projecting his own reaction, I assume?
