AND YET WESTERN CIVILIZATION STANDS

Brake problems stop Amtrak Acela Express service (AP, 4/15/05)

Amtrak canceled service Friday on its Acela Express because of brake problems with the high-speed trains that carry passengers between Washington, New York and Boston. It forced an estimated 10,000 passengers to find seats on other trains.
Before we worry about making them run on time, let's work on getting them to run at all.

Bombardier builds good snowmobiles, but their rail cars in recent years have left a lot to be desired -- they lost out on a $600 million contract with New York on a new series of subway cars because their previous delivery had so many more problems than the ones built in Japan by Kawasaki. And as the story indicates, the Acela cars have had problems in the past.

Glad Orrin hasn't completely taxed away my SUV in favor of trains yet. :)

So even in the only region of the country where rail travel makes sense, Amtrak can't make a go of it. The answer is simple. Sell it or give it away.
