THE STUFF THEY PUT IN THEIR HEADS IS BAD ENOUGH:

Schwarzenegger says he wants to ban junk food at schools (ERICA WERNER, March 6, 2005, AP)

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Sunday he wants to ban all sales of junk food in California schools and legislation was being introduced to accomplish the goal.

Vending machines in schools should be filled with fresh fruits, vegetables and milk, Schwarzenegger said during a question-and-answer session with fans on the final day of his Arnold Classic bodybuilding weekend.

The question session is an annual event at the athletics show.

Schwarzenegger's comments on junk food came in response to a questioner who asked what could be done to combat youth obesity.

"First of all, we in California this year are introducing legislation that would ban all the sale of junk food in the schools," Schwarzenegger said.

Aides said later that the governor supports a bill by state Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Norwalk, that would ban soft drinks at public schools.

The administration hopes to develop a more comprehensive legislative package dealing with snack foods later in the year, said Chief of Staff Pat Clarey. She said that despite Schwarzenegger's comment, all junk food might not be banned.

Such measures are the least we can demand of the state while it's serving in loco parentis.

Here's the next phase of that story, already written.

I once read somewhere that the prisons get better quality food than we give the kids in the school lunch program. That is a disgrace.

There is also the complaint that if we give the kids real food instead of junk food that they won't eat it. Well, the answer to that is the same as my parents used to give me at the dinner table if I didn't eat what was served. I could either eat it or not eat it, but that was the choice.

The vending machines are a profit source for the pondscum who run the school administration, Arnie won't be able to get them out without dynamite.

Yes, yes, eat your vegetables, etc. But I can't shake my admiration for the spirit of the kids in Ed's link running a black market in Snickers right under the noses of the fruit juice Gestapo.

Peter,

Your point is well-taken. There is something to be said for both the free market and the humiliation of the would-be prohibitionists.

The image of these kids emerging from their class on "structural bias against transsexuals in modern America" and then giggling excitedly as they trade in illicit Smarties is the most heartening thing I've imagined in months.
