OSAMA bin Laden gets it. The terror-master understands that the campaign of bombings and assassinations has backfired in Iraq, erasing popular support for Islamist fanatics and unleashing the forces of freedom.So World Terrorist No. 1 sent a message to Regional Terrorist No. 1: We're losing. We need a different strategy.
Osama wants Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to shift his sights from Iraq's population, to help carry the struggle back to American soil. With the old order beginning to crack in the wake of Iraq's elections, bin Laden sees that his last, desperate hope is to hurt America so badly that we quit the fight.
Osama is most likely a blood stain on a cave wall in Tora Bora, but even al Qaeda, though not the Democrats, can figure out we're winningt the WoT quite handily. Of course, another strike on American soil would give us the bogus pretext we need to do Syria and Iran, so it's not a good idea to give these guys too much credit. This is Osama's only possible winning strategy. He still has his enablers at State and in the MSM, even if his Democratic Party supporters are running for cover as they read the nation's mood. A few suicide bombings in a few American metro areas, and we could lose our taste for nation-building. Or the 99% of Americans, who are not Nazis(oops, Paleo-Conservatives) or the Nihilist Left, would unite with a terrible sense of purpose. At this stage, though, it's Osama's only gambit, unless he wants to retire to the life of a louche Saudi princeling.
