The last couple of years have not been easy for anyone, myself included, who hoped that the Iraq war would produce a decent, democratizing outcome.

They have the pro-American strongman option, which they may still use. However, I think that if they do so, it will be a short interregnum between deomcracies - sort of like the flirtations some Latin American countries have had with strongmen in the last 25 years.
