JUST BECAUSE IT'S BEEN BUGGING ME ALL DAY
disenfranchise -- v : deprive of voting rights.
This morning, during a story on Iraq, an NPR reporter stated that the US invasion had "disenfranchised" the Sunnis.
I guess Sadam and his sons were disenfranchised as well. Pity.
Posted by: Tom C., Stamford, Ct. at March 3, 2005 5:13 PMBet the vapid gimp thought it was a bad thing, too. Little new here. After all, among the brights, isn't the newest group requiring "affirmative enfranchisement" felons?

Just be thankful he didn't add that the U.S. invasion was opposed by Iraqi "conservatives".

Posted by: Moe from NC at March 3, 2005 6:58 PMWell, Iraq and Ohio visually have a vague resemblence on a map, plus they both have four-letter names, so no doubt the NPR reporter got the two locations confused. Could happen to anyone at NPR.

Posted by: Robert Schwartz at March 3, 2005 10:07 PMThis morning, an NPR reporter said of the 2.5 percentage point decline in child poverty over the last 10 (15?) years "but, that was a result of a growing economy and employment rather than government programs." As though that is a bad thing, or that it therefore doesn't count.
(In fairness, she may have been paraphrasing the UNICEF report upon which the story was based...hard to tell, given that the biases would be the same from either source.)
