INFILTRATION?:

Border group fears infiltration by supremacists (Susan Carroll, Mar. 5, 2005, Arizona Republic)

The FBI and leaders of a civilian patrol set to descend on southern Arizona next month to prevent undocumented immigrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexican border say they are concerned about White supremacists and other extremists joining the effort.

The Internet-driven recruiting effort for the Minuteman Project has attracted more than 700 volunteers and last week alone generated more than 1 million hits on the project's Web site, organizers said.

But the patrol also has drawn major interest on White supremacist Web sites and in their chat rooms. An Aryan Nation site links directly to the Minuteman Project home page with the words: "A call for action on part of ALL ARYAN SOLDIERS."

You can't tell your nativist from your supremacist from your concerned citizen without a scorecard.

Nor can you tell your Open Borders man from a Communist without a scorecard.

Sure you can. Communists support open borders for the opposite reason Open Borders folk do--they think it'll destroy the economy and the culture and bring the revolution.

Without endorsing any "Aryan soldiers" coming to fight their pointless battles, I have a question. What are the citizens of southern Arizona supposed to do when illegals come over the border, trashing their property, trespassing, traveling with armed "coyotes" who will shoot if you come to near? And the police and Border Patrol can't or won't do anything about it?

Are they only supposed to take control over their retirement, but not their current property? Or should they just say, "We're all Christians here - take whatever you want?"

Not everyone's first concern is the possible increase in future Republican voters. It's easier to take the high road on this subject in Concord than it is in Bisbee.

Both endorse, implicitly with the Open Borders man, explicitly with the Communist, these two propositions: (1) Economics is our master, and (2) the nation-state is an oppression.

Hear, hear, Brandon!

Brandon:

They should press for immigration reform so that these folks are legal.

Posted by: oj at March 6, 2005 2:04 PM

And until this immigration reform is (maybe) passed, what do they do?

Posted by: Brandon at March 6, 2005 2:06 PM

Paul:
Yes, nationalism is oppressive.

Posted by: oj at March 6, 2005 2:08 PM

Brandon:

There's nothing they can do. The immigrants dreams are more powerful than any of the forces arrayed against them.

Posted by: oj at March 6, 2005 2:14 PM

oj,

Brandon is right. You are being unfair here. The people who want to keep the border under control are the ones concerned about being linked up with White Supremacists, something that wouldn't even cause a paleo-con to look in a mirror. I would imagine that as with Glenn Spencer's group, there is no shortage of minority group members including Hispanics, involved in the effort. A border so porous that people could cross it, steal your car, rob your house and then head home with their ill-gotten gains serves no purpose. If you live in El Paso, that's a real issue.

Nations have a right to regulate their borders and to manage immigration in a way that makes economic sense. I would also hope that you would agree that the criminalization of the illegals, who only want the opportunity to do jobs Americans won't do, benefits no one but the exploiter class, whether sweatshop owners, slumlords or coyotes.

OJ,

So they are helpless and should just acquise to their fate to be robbed and bullied, or leave the area? You should leave the east coast time zone everynow and then. Maybe you'd learn that cowboys don't give up even if they're destined to lose.

Posted by: Brandon at March 6, 2005 2:25 PM

Brandon:

American racism is worn too lightly for them to do much. Most of the well-intentioned folk here will be so appalled to realize they're arm-in-arm with neo-Nazis and the like that they'll slink away. We're not going to be as ruthless as would be required to stop folks who just want jobs and better lives for their families.

Posted by: oj at March 6, 2005 2:30 PM

Bart:

We're not going to spend what it would cost to close the American border nor pay the prices we'd have to if we stopped exploiting immigrant labor. As Paul says, economics rules.

Posted by: oj at March 6, 2005 2:32 PM

Closing the border is impractical, stupid and just plain wrong.

A bracero-type system could alleviate both concerns. The typical illegal doesn't want to stay here, he wants to make a few bucks so he can go home to Mexico or wherever and have a decent life.

Another option is an American Foreign Legion, where we could fast-track people for citizenship if they join an American military unit for 5 years.

Bart,
The single male immigrants I know visit Mexico often and might fit into your bracero-type system. The ones that are married (or cohabitating) with children want to stay here.

From New Hampshire OJ tells rough Southwestern ranchers to go to hell. Somehow I doubt they are overly solicitous of New England elitism.

He speaks only for himself when he admits his servility to economics.

OJ,

"Most of the well-intentioned folk here will be so appalled to realize they're arm-in-arm with neo-Nazis and the like that they'll slink away."

That I can live with.

"You can't tell your nativist from your supremacist from your concerned citizen without a scorecard"

That I can't abide.
